There's a story on now about a kid who can play anything you can name on the piano - all you have to do is name it, and he can play it by ear. But he's eight years old, blind, and can't do a lot of the simple things that most people do every day. Dress himself, for instance. Story said he gets lost in his parent's apartment, too - which he's lived in for all but 6 months of his life.

it was about a bunch of kids who grew up mentally disabled but were extremely skilled musically, like with the piano. basically, it suggests that if the brain is impeded in one way it will generate in another way. the show also said that some scientists say that we all have innate genius but because we grow up "normal" (i.e. we can talk, speak, think, see, hear, etc.) we are somehow inhibited from tapping that genius. very interesting stuff.

I thought it was particularly interesting how they thought we each has this ability deep inside but can't "access" it because of our overwhelming ability to reason

This struck a chord with me, as a piano player I know I I can compose and play by ear much more easily either when I'm tired and half asleep or after having taken pain killer...

Yeah, you can make an analogy between a computer. Deep Blue for example can own anyone in chess, but thats all it will ever be able to do.

I think he meant since most of us probably WEREN'T watching, you didn't give much info. Or maybe you were assuming that we are all idiot savants and would know exactly what you're talking about by the vague post.

Which explains geeks. Social skills impeded - technical skills expand inversely proportionally.
