I once worked a 28 hour shift when there was a snowstorm and the person who was supposed to relieve me couldn't make it in. The money was great, but I was burnt out.

Why do hospitals do that to their employees? What is the point? I've ready studies that show that the stress and lack of sleep doctors go through really puts a damper on their ability to mentally perform.

It's more tradition than anything. Recently, the practice has been questioned more and more. I honestly don't know what the point is. It's not like these doctors are going to war. Most of them are going to end up working 9 to 5 in private practice with fridays off for a round of golf. They hardly need endurance training.

The worst shift I ever worked was 20 hours of catering. Started at 4am with prepping food, then barbequed lunch for 500 people, then finished off with a full shift at a beer garden with non-stop serving for about 10 hours. Finished up around midnight.

The longest shift I've ever worked was about 36 straight hours of writing vb code. I'm salary, so no OT for me.
