I wonder how that happened

Clicking "I feel lucky" takes you to the top link in the list. Click the regular button, the click the cached version. Near the top notice this message: "These terms only appear in links pointing to this page: miserable failure "

Meaning - people with web pages that contain the term "miserable failure" are linking to the whitehouse page.

Now check out the 4th link - http://www.blah3.com/graymatter/archives/00000654.html

and it will explain all.

Dependancy on inbound links is the biggest strength (and ironically, weakness) of Google's ranking algorithm. Other search engines use link popularity as a major component as well since Google has led the way in relevancy for the last few years, but others do a better job of being less susceptible to this type of thing since they give more weight to the actual page content than Google does. Notice if you do the same search at FAST (www.alltheweb.com) or Inktomi (search.postiontech.com) that while the first hits are still about George Bush (because they are part of this broad joke) these other engines have algorithms that do not fall victim to the same trick that Google fell for.

It's fairly easy (and pretty common since there have been many occurences of this type joke before) to do this for non common phrases like 'miserable failure' if you can get enough people to work together. If you tried to do the same thing with more common phrases it would be exponentially more difficult.

Everytime Dick Gephardt opens his mouth (actually I think it is his anus) he refers to him as a "miserable failure", which is quite ironic coming from a miserable idiot.

The elite democrats can't win with ideas or actions, so they have to resort to "suggestive programming". If you watch TV or read a paper and see the same negative phrase associated with someone, over and over and over, your brain eventually embeds the link between the two in the subconcious. I think the democrats actually believe their own words because they themselves have brainwashed themselves in their quest for dominance.

What do you expect when a bunch of trained Pigeonsdecide what you should be looking at. I love google. Who else would claim their software was operated by a team of trained birds... 😀

In previous pranks, tricksters have rigged Google to bring up spoof pages. For instance, after France refused to join the coalition forces fighting Iraq, a Google search for "French military victories" brought up a spoof page that said no documents were found and asked, "Did you mean 'french military defeats.'"

LOL
