I found a link to download some Radeon drivers made by a 3rd party. I don't even have the card, but I thought if these drivers make a really large difference in performance then perhaps the 8500 could really become a strong competitor to those of us in the know. I suggest backing up your current drivers if you want to try these out, as there is no guarantee that they work properly. They are supposedly optimized for performance. Here is the link.

yeah, there're Omega drivers for the Radeon.. they've been around for a while (with newer versions popping up along with the ones at Rage3D)..

I've never tried them cause I have absolutely no problem with the speed I'm getting on my current drivers.. though perhaps I'll do some research on these, just in case :)

btw, is it me, or are the Radeon series starting to feel a bit more like 3dfx cards? I mean, when it comes to driver updates, they've been consistant over the past year in releasing at least once a month.

of course, the quality of the drivers still aren't quite up to par.. I mean, games simply work with the Radeon and all, (so gamers really won't notice any problems), the speed just isn't quite there! it drives me nuts thinking of the potential of the ORIGINAL Radeon due to it's HyperZ! I don't see why it shouldn't hit and pass the GTS in nearly every benchmark, yet it doesn't!

and there're a few other questions I have with ATi drivers.. I'm wondering if we really DO have control over our settings (whether changing driver settings, or GAME settings) for those of us who want to have the best speed, or the best quality, rather than the compromize that ATi showed us with Quake 3 and their Radeon 8500..

I'm doing some research with my Radeon on the controllability aspect right now, it really feels bad to know that I don't trust this company, cause their card is so damned good, and it works!

finally, the other aspect that would PROBABLY push ATi's drivers to equal status with nVidia is the quality of the drivers for professional apps!

IMHO, if the drivers comply with all DX and OpenGL standards, then the only thing ATi has to worry about are optimization for speed (on the HARDWARE side, not by changing options in the games), and whether or not they will allow us more options like 3dfx cards (I can't comment on how many options nVidia gives u by default).

ok, so I've been a bit less than forcoming on game compatability.. right now my brother is playing Driver on the Radeon, but it's too bright. he hasn't figured out what the problem is, though I suspect if we re-installed windows (this was upgraded from a 3dfx Voodoo 3) it might go away. that, and NFS4 (haven't tested NFS3 yet) which appears to have some decent D3D suport (note DECENT, I don't know how good it really is), does not run well on the Radeon.. I HAVE updated the drivers though, so maybe that's been fixed?

but the games run.. if only I can get that nagging feeling that I can't control my own settings off my back, I'll feel much better (cause this card simply is a good card). it seems to me that ATi hasn't taken the same route nVidia has with drivers, and that is to go for API compatability first, game compatability second... I think I like that idea, as the only problems that ever creep up then are hardware glitches (which DO happen, even with nVidia cards) due to the way the card renders things.
