Omega ATI Radeon drivers and Windows Media Player conflict?

I recently installed Omega's ATI Radeon drivers for Half Life 2. A slight improvement was noticeable in the game and the rest of the system seemed OK with the drivers except for Windows Media Player (WMP).

Now whenever I attempt to play videos with WMP it:
- stutters along at approximately one frame every 5-15 seconds
- crashes WMP so that I can no longer launch it without rebooting
- keeps WMP running in the background
- And worst of all eventually prevents Windows from being able to shut down forcing me to "hard" power down.

Intervideo's WinDVD application seems to be able to run the same video files on the same PC without any problems.

Is there a setting in the Omega driver control panel that I need to tweak for Windows Media Player? I haven't attempted to upgrade to the latest WMP version or reinstall the old video drivers. Wanted to confirm whether or not this is a known issue first.

System specs:
Windows XP Pro SP1
P4 2.6GHz with Hyperthreading
512MB Ram
ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility
latest omega video drivers

Thanks in advance.

It's not the Omega's, I heard reports of the same thing happening with official ATI 4.12 beta ("for HL2") drivers screwing up/slowing-down video playback.

Guess you'll have to roll-back, or wait for them to fix the issue. Sorry.

The readme that came with the Omega drivers states that the version of drivers they are based on are the Beta Catalyst 8.07 drivers.

Not sure if Beta Catalyst 8.07 is synonomous with ATI 4.12 beta.
