This is a great deal. I love Olympus cameras and this one is a step up from the 340 & 360 series. It's quite big...looks like a standard 35mm but much easier to use than its predecessors..ie you no longer bump your nose on the lcd! The motorized zoom lens is also first rate. All in all for anyone looking to buy a digital camera this one is evry bit as good as any camera you can buy for double the price!

Great Deal!

Yep- I just double checked. 1024x768 resolution. One would think the 500 series had higher resolution than the 300 series.

I like the design. They moved it over from their IS series SLR cameras.

flot,
I've seen your pix before. They're really nice shots. Don't know where I found a link to it a while back...
You're using a circular polarizer in a lot of those shots right?

Damn not another Z guy in here...shouldn't you be at Z32.org or sometime?...hehe. Anyway, Olympus makes high quality digicams. I owned the 340R and 450Z before, both are great cameras. The only negative I see in the 500L is the itty bitty 2MB smartmedia and the bulky design. But why am I complaining? I have a Canon Powershot Pro 70 that is just as bulky. BTW, I have a Nikon Coolpix 800 as well. Of all the digicams I've owned, the Canon has the best picture quality.

You might want to check out Olympus' website. I think this camera can only go as high as 16mb smartmedia, I am not positive. I can say that Olympus takes some of the best pictures. I own a 340L and love it! In my opinion Casio takes the worst!

Mercata has a much better deal going on a Nikon 800 Digital Cam. Higher resolution, better quality, and it uses Compact Flash ... which more cameras use. I think there is a $75 rebate, and Mercata is hitting new customers with 20% -- and free shipping.

Final is somewhere around $325 -- for a much better camera.

I don't think the Nikon Coolpix 800 is as good as the Olympus 500l....maybe the Nikon 900 or 950 but not the 800. With the Nikon you'll have to wait for a few weeks or months to get that $75.00 rebate. Also is that mercata 20% an instant reduction or a rebate?

Anyway as far as picture quality is concerned, I've used both, and the Olympus is much better. Also I'm just about certain the Nikon 800 only has a 2x optical zoom which is a huge factor if you plan on taking closeups, e'g if you ever want to sell anything on fleabay! I've tried to snap a few closeups of a coin with a 2x optical zoom and its pretty blurry.

However, the question you should be concerned with when looking for a digital camera is what its purpose will be and your budget..of course.
As far as I am concerned if you can get this camera for $299 from a reputable dealer then it is a great deal. Somemone mentioned the 360L..this is also a great camera but like the Nikon 800 only has a 2x optical lens. But it can probably be found for just over $200 and is small and compact, great for travel and perfect for your garden variety casual photographer. Whereas the 500l is much bulkier but to me, more comfortable. The motorised zoom lens on the 500L is far superior to the 360l. One more thing I highly recommend purchasing an AC adapter with these Olympus cameras as they tend to chow batteries and its a hack constantly recharging the buggers. Good luck!

What's a good website that discuss digital camera? I'm currently looking for one. Probably looking in the $600-$800 area, with 2.1MPixels. Do you guys have any suggestion?

Olympus 2020z. But that price range also includes olypmus' 3000z, some small tweaks to minor annoyances, and adds sound to video (but not and important factor in my eyes)... and 3MP+

THe 3030z is like the 3000z, but has a 32MB buffer to take faster shots. You could probably get the camera itself for $800 if you look hard enough and use pointclick or something similar. BUT, you have to factor in AT LEAST a 32MB card, a USB smartmedia reader (2020, the 3030/3000 are usb), NiMH batteries/charger (3000/3030, the 2020 comes w/ these), carrying case, and a strap fort he lens cap.

Thank you guys for all those links! I appreciate it. The ones I have in mind right now is the Kodak DC290, Epson 850z, or the Olympus (probably the 3000z). Which do you guys prefer?
