My friend is wondering if he can use an Olevia (I think 27in) HDTV as a PC monitor.

Will it work well or be fuzzy? What kind of cables does he need?

It will not be as sharp.
It most likely is 720P so that means 720 pixels across 24+- inches.
A pc monitor has 720 pixels across 15+- inches, much sharper than a tv screen.
It will work via dvi but you should know that the pixels are twice the size. That means jaggy.

I believe it depends mostly on how far away you are sitting from the screen.

It will definitely work, but you may have to sit a farther back from the screen than a usual monitor.

It will work, but only you know if it will give you the performance you want.
27"(you think) so 99% chance its a 1080i/720p TV so it has ~1366x768 resolution. Are you used to 1024x768 or 1440x900? If your use to 1600x1200 or 1680x1050 however, you may not be as happy w/ it as you would like to be. Big screens do rock though.
If the TV has a DVI input, you can just use a normal dvi-d to dvi-d cable. If it only has HDMI then you need a DVI-D to HDMI cable.
