A lot of us have been annoyed by seeing OLED in phones, TVs and even in smartwatches - but not in computer monitors.

Well, LG seems to be wanting to change this.

According to ETNews, LG display aims to start producing OLED panels for computer monitors and laptops. LG wants to diversify their OLED product lineup, and this seems like a logical next step. ETNws estimates that the first monitors will be released in 2016 or 2017.

We should take all of these reports with massive grains of salt. There have been many false alarms in the past. So why would it be different now?

Well, for one, maturing yields and OLED technology is the big one. Just like 4K TVs were coming down in price really fast, so are OLED. Maybe not as fast, but still quite briskly.

LG has been reporting ever-increasing yields in their OLED facilities and since even Apple is going to go OLED within a few years, it stands to reason that we are facing a generational shift where LCD is, finally, singing its last swansong.

Maybe we can finally look forward to the 4K@120 fps with HDR monitors and all of it on OLED. It's just ironic that such a reality would become true just as VR is starting to become more and more mainstream. I expect a lot more VR games and a much bigger software ecosystem by 2017/2018.

But such a problem is nice to have.

I still want to see the reliability and aging. OLED have been disasterous so far. So bad it got CLED development started. I know LG only uses white OLEDs to at least solve some of the issues relating to the blue. I dont want to replace my monitor every 2-3 years.

That's the thing about organic molecules; they like to break down unless you feed them.
 
This is why I went with a cheap $200 Korean 1440p panel for my upgrade last month. Monitor technology is coming along quickly and right now nothing really has it all, and I wouldn't drop $700 with the 'revolution' coming soon.

What is the refresh rate of OLED. My friend got an OLED TV recently and LG is not really stating a refresh rate but it is up there with Plasma i believe.
 
Refresh rate is more of a feature of the display controller than the panel. Oled should be capable of very high refresh rates, if paired with an appropriate controller.

The specs state 120Hz but that doesn't matter. The response time is 0.1ms, or at least 10X faster than the fastest LCD/LED. From a panel point of view, for fast motion, even a 240Hz LCD/LED cannot compete at all. The issue with OLED TVs is high(er) input lag for PC gaming.

Input Lag: 43.5 ms
With Interpolation: 110.9 ms
Outside Game Mode: 110.8 ms
Labeling the input with the PC icon brings the input lag down to 43.5 ms on the LG 55EG9100. Game mode has a slightly higher input lag of 52.4 ms.

Sounds nice but will probably take 5+ years before it becomes affordable. LG's OLED strategy is to target the high-end market, not low-end or even mid-range. If they will make 4K @ 120hz OLED with HDR + FreeSync/G-Sync, these monitors will cost more than anything on the market. Why? It's simple - because nothing else will be able to compete for IQ and response time (LG OLED has a 0.1ms response time). Look at LG's market strategy with OLED right now. They know they make the best TV for IQ so they price it accordingly.

Reliability aside (I hope replacing the 'O' [organic] with the 'C' [crystal] fixes that), I had never had a better (but small) viewing experience than on that old Galaxy S phone, it inspired me to get the Galaxy Tab S 8.4, which is also AMOLED (I only use it - because of the reliability concerns - for special occasions like checking a photo, The Wizard of Oz, or when the other tablet's battery is dead🙁), and I know a lot of people say they look too saturated, but in the right light life looks nicely saturated.

There are settings in android that will turn the saturation down. It's not an issue inherent to AMOLED, just the settings Samsung uses.

Also, has there been any sort of recent news on CLED? I haven't read anything about it in a couple of years.

They won't. There is no standard that can drive it. DP1.3 can't deliver those. You'll need to drop one. 4K, 120hz, or HDR.

We won't have this until DP1.3 is replaced in 5-8(?) years.

4K streaming is garbage compared to 1080p uncompressed (or even just moderately compressed), the artifacting is terrible, especially WRT dark scenes. Even though the tech is here on both ends, the delivery system is suspect, and that won't change until our broadband system is entirely overhauled. UHD Blu-Ray is a good stopgap, but it isn't the "killer app" that will make 4K indispensable.

I just noticed this. What a disappointment when finally viewing 4K at my 65" TV. The picture is crystal clear but there are tons of artifacts both with motion compensation on and off. We just need a lot more bitrate/bandwidth apparently.

Are you saying you only use the Galaxy for special occasions because you are worried the OLED screen will die? Do you plan on keeping the tablet for 50 years?

That was my reaction as well lol.

Bradly, USE YOUR TABLET!! I have a Samsung Tab S as well and use it every day. Don't worry too much about the longevity...more than likely something else will fail before the blue dots get dimmer.

QFT. I've been on a 24" MVA monitor for the past 8 years. I tried out the BenQ BL3200PT to see if I can finally upgrade (I want a MVA panel as I like the black levels), but that plan was hosed as that panel had several issues, and every 30"+ panel I look at has issues it seems. I'd pay double what the equivalent LCD monitor cost if I could get an OLED monitor.
