Older SCSI-2 v's ATA-66/100 which to use?

OK - I've got 2 x 4gb SCSI-2 older Seagate HD's:

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/scsi/st34572w.html

They are 7200 rpm/9.4ms Barracudas connected to a standard Adaptec 2930UW.

Currently I boot Win2k off drive one and have 90% of my apps on drive 2.

In order to simplify my system (free a PCI slot etc!) I was thinking of ditching these drives and just going with 2 x 45GB IBM IDE 7200rpm drives....

Worth it? Has ATA-100 surpassed SCSI-2 in speed etc?

Any comments appreciated.

While a new ATA drive may be a little faster (due to more data density), I wouldn't ditch SCSI just yet... Zero CPU utilization is good... You'll probably want some different opinions, but if I was in your situation I would be so happy because I have SCSI, something I have always wanted, but could never afford.

You'll get equal or better performance from the IBM 75GXP. Then again, it's nice to simplify your system, but what are you going to do with the SCSI stuff afterwards? It won't command much dough, and few people would want two small, hot, noisy drives, a bulky controller, and a thick cable as a present. You might be better off hanging on to the SCSI stuff and building a new ATA/100 system when it comes time to ditch your old one.

I'd probably just keep the drives/controller hanging around "just in case". Its tempting to simplify especially if a new IBM drive would be faster...

a new IDE drive should easily matched the performance of the SCSI system you have IMHO. FYI SCSI-2's bandwidth is max at 10MB/s (narrow, non-ultra).

Technically and for all practical purposes, even ATA-66 surpasses SCSI-2 except for CPU utilization. But with powerful CPU, IDE's CPU utilization is almost null. The big question is what would you be putting on the 1 PCI that will be freed and would worth the cost of 1 SCSI card, 2 SCSI HD's and 2 new HD's? I mean with the cost of these devices you could have both a new MB just to get an extra PCI or two.
