Older PVA panels good for gaming/multimedia use?

I am about to jump the gun on a new monitor, and was initially set on the G2400WD but then switched to the Dell 2209WA based on xtknight's recommendation in the LCD thread. However today I looked around in the local shops and there was a 'shop demo' Acer AL2623W 25.5" S-PVA which had been returned by a previous buyer and was claimed to be otherwise in perfect condition, and selling for $535 versus its original price of $1100 (!).

After reading a couple of reviews of the Acer 25.5", it doesn't seem to be a great monitor. On the other hand there is another, similarly old PVA monitor, the 24" Benq FP241W which has good reviews; I can get this one for about $570.

So what do you guys think? Would either of these be a good option to the BenQ G2400WD or the Dell 2209WA? I can get the BenQ for $350 and the Dell for $445 (yeah Denmark is expensive). OR I could go crazy and pay about $1550 for what is apparently the best IPS panel out there, the 25.5" NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi.

My main usage would be gaming including shooters and racing simulations, and watching movies, plus the usual desktop work such as coding etc; no professional-level image editing, proofing etc.

Until now I have only used a crappy generic 19" LCD so for me the step up to a 24 to 25.5 inch would be awesome and something I've long waited for. But of course I don't want to spend the money wisely, so the advice of people more experienced with LCDs will be highly appreciated.
