Older power supply still good?

Hello all.

I am thinking about upgrading my puter and wanted to know if I really needed to buy a new case/power supply. I would like to keep my current one and just replace the key components.

This is what I bought 5 years ago.

Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 650W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply with Three 12V Rails

I will be getting an AMD chipset with quad core most likely. I will also be getting a high-end GPU as well.

Any ideas would help greatly.

ThankZ

Mine is close to the 4 years old. I reused mine for my sandy bridge stuff. I'd also consider how often your pc has been cycled on/off? Was it stressed almost to the limit much? You should have a good idea of how much abuse it's taken and decide from there.
I've never really gotten close to the 850w limit on mine and I'm an occasional gamer so my 4 years is probably 2 to someone else.

Open it up and inspect the caps to be sure. I do it every year once the PSU is out of warranty.

i have a seasonic s12 600 odd watts from like 2005 that was originally used on a socket 939 amd system to core 2 duo now to sandy bridge. considering that new systems use less power, you should be fine

Thanks again everyone. I will check the caps and just keep it and see how it does. I guess I am just surprised that newer systems use less power.... 🙂

Decent power supplies that arn't under stress (ex: being pushed beyond or at their capacity) normally last quite long. Consider that most appliances such as your TV have a built in power supply. Lot of the stuff works at a lower DC voltage. Normally something else goes before it.

Power supplies mainly go bad when not used. The capacitors need to have a charge on them occasionally to keep them in working order. Lifespan of a supply that was designed properly and not abused can be 30-40 YEARS.
