Older Pentium 4 Proccessor

Blackjack2000

I have a old Pentium 4 2.54 ghz with 512 MB of slow (pc2100) RAM, an AGP slot, and a crappy 15 inch CRT that maxes out at 1024 x 768

I'd eventually like to build a nice gaming system with a new mobo, processor, OS, RAM, Video Card, and HD... Obviously to take advantage of all that I'll need a new monitor too.

But for now, could this system play modern games (FEAR, Civ IV, WOW) etc. at decent framrates if I added a 9800 pro or something of that nature?

CIV4 and WOW will EASILY run on a system like that...They aren't that intensive. WOW runs perfectly fine on my 2400+ with a TI4200~ I occaisonally get hickups, but I beleive most of it is due to my ram...

New monitor and video card should help some. But agp is dying so best card out for agp is x850xt pe. You might as well wait for m2 coming out next year and get x2 3800 and new card with it.

Add an AGP x800XL and your system will be able to play most modern games at 1027x768. You may have to turn down some eye candy on games like FEAR. P4 2.53CPU wasn't too shabby a proc. I would recomment upgrading to 1GB or so of at least PC2700 RAM (3200 may acutally be cheaper now days.)
