Older PC: Video Card Shot

During shipping from school, my desktop's video card arrived dead... booted it and it just pixelated everything and it definately seems shot.

My card also was AGP.

(SPECIFICATIONS IN SIGNATURE)

I have three decisions I see fit to present here.

(1) Buy a new AGP card and keep on trucking
(2) Sell the system (scrap for parts) and move on to a new frontier with PCI-E and better parts.
(3) I just bought a Gateway CX210X Convertiable Notebook (Tablet Style), with Chassis w/ ATI Mobility? Radeon® X1400 64MB Graphics (up to 256MB HyperMemory) and Intel® Core? 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2.00GHz, 667MHz FSB, 4MB L2 Cache), and 4gb ram 80gb 7200rpm harddrive. And just use this as my primary machine.

What do I use the comp for?

I use to be a much more hardcore gamer, but it's dropped off lately with being busy, school, etc. But that doesn't mean I still don't like to game. Games I play when I can are like Battlefield 2, and I see myself going into some of the newer games coming out maybe like Starcraft 2, etc.

I mean I probably could put together a budget of $1k plus the scrap from the old pc.

I also travel a lot in the summer, which is why I have such a powerful notebook that is capable of gaming, and doing a lot of other such things. I also do a small amount of video encoding, but that may pick up when I pick up a new video camera to bring along with me for home movies and when I fly at times.

So I am sort of leaning towards a new computer idea, and if you agree can anyone just give me a very basic picture of parts I should look into?? I will do plenty of research myself, but just looking for a starting point for the build.

I also appreciate any comments on what others thing I should do.

Just get a new video card, preferably something used. With an FX-55 and 2GB RAM there's not much sense upgrading to a new platform. In my opinion, of course.

Replace your Motherboard w/ a cheap 939 PCI-E board and get a PCI-E graphics card, with the money you save by going pci-e over agp you can afford the new motherboard and be more future proof.

That's a good call. If you've got a 939 FX-55, then definitely just get a cheap nForce4 board, and something reasonable like a 7900 or an x1950.
