Older PC Doesn't Recognize PCI Wireless Adapter

Okay, I realize I'm probably becoming known for some very "out there" questions. I'm working with a friend of mine on reconditioning a geriatric IBM NetVista PC (Cu-mine Celeron 533) to return to active duty, most likely as a PC for serving tunes to a stereo in his "garage theater". I've been provided with a D-Link "Air" DWL-520 Rev. A wireless adapter card. I toss the card in, and download the drivers from D-Link's web site, but nothing doing. The computer only recognizes the card as an "Ethernet Adapter", not specifically as a D-Link DWL-520. So when I try to install the drivers for the DWL-520, Windows tells me that the drivers aren't for the "Ethernet Adapter". So my problem is, Windows doesn't recognize the card as a specific brand and model, just as a generic "Ethernet Adapter", and as a result, the brand and model specific drivers don't get installed for the card.

Is the card just fubared? Or do I need to try to install the drivers from within the provided setup program before physically inserting the card?

The best way to do this is probably to go to the device manager, right click on the device, select Update Driver, choose "Don't search, I will choose the best driver to install", click next, click the Have Disk button, then browse to the folder where the driver's located and click on the .inf file. Windows will complain that it's not the right driver for the device, ignore it.
