Older MSI board & AP - unstable - please help!

I called MSI and asked if I could replace the bad 650 Duron with an XP1500 on the Pro2 - which has the KT133 chip (not A). They said yes, but that it would run underclocked. Ok - I get the CPU, and it does fine - to start. Then it starts locking up - at various places during boot.

I had increased the FSB to 107 - it was doing fine - but I went back to default - 1000 (100x10) when I started experiencing trouble.

I pull the newest bios down on a floppy with another machine, and load it to C drive on the suspect unit, and go back to prompt and load the new bios. Stills locks up.

I check out all my start items in System Info (using 98SE) - and there sure are a lot of them (some duplicated). I try to pick and choose those I want to disable - and this time it boots all the way, and I am running fine - until I try to defrag. Boom, she locks again.
(Is there a way to get rid of the duplicated items that are in start?)

Right now she is defraging in safe mode. By the way - I did look in the new bios, and it is more to set than the old. I disabled the onboard sound, and on chip sound. Thought there would be a conflict as I do have a PCI sound card.

I may have to get away from XP, but I hope not. Any help out there??
