older laptop...worth it to try for X1300, X1400 or even V5200/5250 instead of GMA950

I have an older Thinkpad T60...I was thinking about upgrading the graphics from the built-in GMA950 to either motherboard they offer with X1300 (64MB), X1400(128MB), V5200(256MB), or V5250(512MB).

It runs nice and cool now, I don't want a flame thrower on my lap. This is mostly a travel for email/web type of machine...I have an iPad so most of the surfing I do on the couch if I need too is on that.

I don't plan on 'gaming' on this in the modern sense, but I'd like to load up some FPS games for travel.

CPU is a T7200 and I have 2GB of RAM. HD is a Scorpio Blue 500GB if it matters for bottlenecks.

Resolution is 1400x1050.

The laptop was free and was never touched. It spent it's whole life in a dock and never moved so I don't mind 'investing' a little.

A motherboard is about $75 with the X1400 and $120 if I went to the V5250.

I just am not sure the real differences in a game like HalfLife or Unreal Tournament, etc...games from 2006 will be.

May throw on Quake or Doom...nothing really current.

I was burglarized last year. I had an old Dell D400 in my home and an Armada M700 in my Garage that were stolen. This thinkpad for free was a GodSend. Especially in my garage hooking up that laptop to my Nikko NR-1019 vintage reciever and blasting music.

I have spent a bit and bought:
500GB Scorpio Blue

T7200 CPU

I will probably buy:
the bluetooth module and cable

wireless bluetooth mouse

the atheros wireless abgn card (don't have n in this one)

SXGA LCD replacement (on the iPad 10x7 is cool, on my D400 even it sucked) I just worry about a screen not as clean as mine. It's mint, only one dead pixel...the whole panel is blemish free, not even a minor scratch.

either X1300, X1400, V5200 or V5250 video. I will mostly just websurf on this and do email when my iPad is not cutting it...play a few games here and there. From the reports I read the X1400 seems the way to go for the least problems. The V5250 is like a X1700 but it's finicky and hot it seems.

All that said I may have $200-250 in this 'brand new' laptop that is still pretty damn powerful for a secondary computer.

I also have the t7200...but since my panel is dead im hooked up to an lcd.

running @ 1024x768, pretty much medium details...half life 2 is quite playable (40+ fps) unless you turn on the flashlight, then FPS cuts in half, more or less. i played up til i got the crowbar, and as long as the flashlight wasnt on, things went smooth.

id get 50fps+ in some environments where there wasnt much to look at and i wasnt going a lot

hope that helps, i have tf2 but dont really have time to fiddle with it today

anyway...ordered up some goodies last night. 1400x1050 screen, motherboard with a 2GHz Core Duo chip I can resell, my wireless N module, and a bluetooth module.

I will be at about $250, but the laptop was free. My old screen was mint, but has one stuck/dead pixel about an inch up from the bottom center.

Need to hunt down a mouse, case and travel charger.

If you're looking for a "notebook" mouse, look for a Logitech VX Nano. They're discontinued now (Anywhere MX is the replacement), but they were / are excellent and I've seen them going for as little as $20-30 or so.

Was hoping to go bluetooth. My wife used to have the VX Nano. It was a really good mouse.
