I just bought a older laptop for a decent price(Gateway Solo 5150) which has a PII 333mhz. Anyway I got to noticing after about 30mins of use the bottom of the laptop was nice and warm.

Well I shut it down to see if I could locate any fans on the inside. Well I spotted one so I turned the system back on. After a few mins I slowly turned the laptop over while on to see if the fan was active. It wasn't spinning at all.

What I would like to know is would it get hot enough to fry it? Also do they just kick on and off while the system is running?

I dont know about that laptop but I had an old thinkpad 760 that could literally fry an egg and it never died or fried. There was no fan in it and this sucker REALLY would give you a 3rd degree burn!

As far as I know the fan(s) should always spin on a laptop that old. It might get hott enough to fry your system, but I would think it would shut itself down or crash first.

Atleast it isn't an Apple... those burst into flames right infront of you ;)

yeah but would it be something that would keep you from buying it? I haven't paid for it yet. Is it that important?

How well do laptop coolers work?

I use a laptop cooler and I get almost 10F cooling.
I have a metal rack between laptop and cooler.

How much are you paying for it (if you don't mind me asking.)

A PII 333Mhz can't do much at all... I wouldn't spend anymore than $50 on it, if that.

I have a Sony Vaio P3 366MHz, and it has a fan that is always going. The laptop is good for html / javascript coding, and getting online around the house if I'm working on something. :)

I paid $19 shipped for my Yate Loon cooling pad.
