Older laptop freezing at "Setup is starting Windows 2000" during installation

A friend of mine gave me her laptop, an HP Pavilion N3350, to reformat and upgrade to Win2k. During the installation of Win2k, it froze at the screen where it says, "Setup is starting Windows 2000". I found this article on MS:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=234772

I have updated the BIOS to the latest bios, taken out the extra memory module, did a low level format with both killdisk and the Hitachi HD Utility disk, and also ran both the Hitachi HD quick test and advanced test, which the drive both passed, and it still hangs on this screen.

Any ideas?

And just to see if there is a hardware problem, I tried installing both Win98SE and Win98. For whatever reason, it won't boot from the Win98SE disk nor from the Win98 disk to install the respective OS's. You can boot from those CD's to install them usually, can't you?

Just tried the Win2k disk again, and it's going through the installation motions fine (of course until it gets to the "Setup is starting Windows 2000" screen).
