Older gaming staples that need to be done away with

I was going to try out Metroid Prime 3 on my roommates Wii, only to be disappointed to find that all 3 save slots were being used. Why in the flying FUCK would any modern console need save slots? It was necessary with the limited in game memory of the SNES, but hasn't really been needed for quite a while now. Why is shit like this still being used?

Wow that is awful. Are you sure it only allows 3 save spots? I mean seriously man that is such awful design for current gen that it is borderline unbelievable.

It's probably an effort to make it "Easier to Use", but I agree it's not a good idea in this day and age. I'm a fan of over saving, especially after KOTOR glitched out on me and my over-saving meant I had saves sufficiently far back in the game to recover and not have to start over from the beginning.

Also look around... you might be able to "hack" something using SD cards to save older saves off the console, delete it, and then xfer it back when done. I don't have a Wii but I see a lot of save files being distributed online for the game.

IIRC Metro 2033 has only one save.

I can see cartridges (DS) having save slots, but its dumb for consoles.

The Wii does have "only" 512MB of internal memory. Perhaps its just some sort of BS courtesy thing to not take up too much of that memory + inference that most gamers won't need more than 3 saves + old development habit.

As it has already been stated, you might try swapping saves from the internal memory to an SD card.

Save checkpoints also need to die. I think the idea behind them is to prevent cheating. But, how often do I have to quit my game to get up and do something. I don't want to run around looking for a checkpoint. I should just be able to save anytime and continue from that exact spot later.

It drives me up the wall when I see DS games with only one save slot. I've reviewed a couple of Disney Interactive games like Toy Story 3 that does this and it is highly annoying in a household with more than one kid.

I don't know if it is a space issue or their way of 'encouraging' you to buy more than one copy.
