Older games for a small LAN party?

Howdy,

I rescued some old p3-866 machines from the recycling pile at work and thought I'd hook them up for mini LAN parties at my house. I'm looking for games that will run fine on these systems.

The only thing I have laying around is StarCraft.

Any recommendations for older games that can be played networked (not needing a pay service at all) that will run on p3-866 machines running XP with 512 RAM? COudl be anything from cartoony games, racing games, strategy, etc.

Thanks!

Half-Life 1, Total Annilihation (sp), any of the C&C series, Team Fortress, Quake 3 (maybe, not sure on the specs required), Unreal Tournament, Warcraft 2

Serious sam could be fun too, and also CS.

CS will play on anything same with SC. AoE is also a great game.

I really like the C&C games more than TA and SC, but at least get one RTS. RTS games are hella fun for LAN parties. Something like 2v2 is great. Original C&C rocks!!

For FPS, games like Team Fortress and Tribes are the most fun IMO, but you need more players. For a smaller LAN I'd go with something like the original UT or Q3 or earlier.

For racing... maybe something like one of the older Need for Speed games? I like Porsche Unleashed the most, but not everyone is into sims, some of the NFS games are more arcadey than PU.

AoK can be lots of fun and doesn't need hardware acceleration I don't believe. Fun thing with large AoK games (8 players) is that you all end up reaching Imperial and all the special units make appearances.

I first ran Counter-strike on a 16MB TNT video card and it played it perfectly.

The Worms series is a blast for LAN play and will work on those systems with no problems.

C&C Red Alert 2 + yuri's revenge FTW

Ran fine on my PII 333mhz, with S3 salvage. I think...

But theres 8 player support in yuri and its hella fun to play too.

Definitely Total Annihilation. I remember having an awesome LAN party playing TA on just P133s.

The older C&C games are unfortunately quite tricky to get working on LANs with XP. I have only had success with serial cables, which work great but only support two players.

Apart from the stuff already mentioned, I would recommend UT, the Descent games and Freespace 2 SCP, which are the games I've been playing with my brother recently. FS2 in particular is now freely available and has a strong co-op component that can be a lot of fun if you get several players.

Where do you plan to get these old games from? Do stores even carry them anymore? I ask because I have a similar machine but with a Radeon 9200 and I want to get some games for it.

Another vote for the original Unreal Tournament :)

Up until just recently that was almost the only game my friends and I played at our LAN parties...
