Older CPU Question

Well, time to upgrade to a new machine, but I'm looking to suck every last bit of juice from this one, so I can have two 'decent' machines.

Thing of it is, that this motherboard can only support up to 600mhz p3's (512kb) (its an older bx2 motherboard)

are there any reputable places to buy these 'aging' processors from? preferrably retail--I don't want to monkey around with things too much, but I will if there is no hope 🙂
 
All I can suggest is going to pricewatch. There you'l find some of the lowest prices. But you're gonna be paying an arm and a leg for retail versions of that CPU. I would suggest trying to get an OEM one as most of the time, these have 30 day or 90 day warranties. From what I've found, thsoe CPUS go for over $150. Also does it have to be 512KB cache? You could save alot of money by going with a 256KB. I think they're around $100 or so.

BTW: Does the board support 600E (100), 600B (133), 600EB (133)?
 
The older Katami PIII's only had 512Kb L2 cache.

How about buying a 2nd hand cpu?
In the UK I checkout Micromart for that kinda thing

A PIII with 512Kb cache is the PIII 600 with no letters after it at all 🙂 (except the 133FSB version which is B)
 
well, I'd love to use the coppermine core, but you see, my motherboard doens't support the voltage or something stupid I forget. it just doens't support it (says intel)

so I guess I get to figure out if I can apply thermal paste correctly, eh.
 
tsu...i got an p3 550e that i'm trying to get rid of. Check it out...it's on my rigs page...it's like a yr old and it's OC'd to 733 without any problems. PM me if ur interested.

Some socket convertors had their own VRM(Soltek made 1) which overrode the m/brds one ,that would get you past the voltage problem🙂,that just leaves bios support.......
 
i think bx chipset supports beyond 600mhz cpus.
i have BH6 (bx chipset) and its running 950 cpu (633 @950) it even boots into 112 x 9.5 but freezes booting into windows.

It's not just down to the chipset ,it's also dependant on the motherboard ,on whether its VRM can supply a low enough cpu voltage
 
get get a decent slocket with voltage adjustment like a msi or asus one & select the flipchip coppermine of your choice. you will have to set the voltage on the slocket to 1.8V. the latest bios would also be helpful. even without a coppermine supporting bios the combo should work but you will see a bios cpu id error on startup(if no coppermine support) which actually doesn't affect the running of that flipchip!
 
That will only work if the m/brd has a VRM capable of delivering the lower voltages in the 1st place.If it hasn't then he'll need a slocket with it's own VRM to supply the correct voltage.
 
I thought I was running into the same problem with my BX board, but when I flashed the latest ASUS bios on to it I had lower voltages available and higher multipliers. I bought one of the newer PIIIs at 850 MHz (max for the new bios) and a slotket and it's running great at 935 MHz (8.5*110MHz). Good luck!
