Older comp, better divx playback??

My freind has a Pentium 3 700, a TNT2 Card, and a 19" Sony trinitron at 1152 x 864 X 32. I have a K7 1.33, Radeon DDR 64mb, a CTX VL950 19" at 1280 X 1024 x 32. DIVX playback, especially at full screen, is much better on his computer. Is it because of the Trinitron? (we both have the same version of the divx codec and directx. and we both use the same player).

Monitor won't matter unless it's image quality you're having troubles with. Like cchen: How much ram?
Could also be that your system is just lagged by old drivers, dirty registry, lots of background progs, etc.

none of that. He has 192mb of ram. I have 256mb (ddr) at worst i usually have 50% of ram free. I have all the latest drivers as well.

Same OS? When did he last reload and when did you? If you system hasn't been reloaded in a while, and his has, then you might just have too much junk on there.

are you comparing playback of the same movie? i can't imagine a movie that wouldn't be smooth on your system but if you are comparing different movies then they might have different bitrates. also, try using the 1152x864 resolution also and see if it makes a difference

The exact same movie, which was loaded onto our computers from the same CD. (in order to eliminate cdrom chokes and stutters) I have an IBM 60GXP 40 gig HD, seak time is fast, i dont' think it can be a bottle neck.

Yes, everything is the same. Plus regardless of what player we run it on, his looks better..and it's evident. DVD playback on my computer is perfectly fine, clear as anything, so I doubt it some display problem. Plus what odd, is that I run my desktop at a higher resolution than does my friend; it should thus be better quality on those grounds alone. I installed the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, minus the AGP driver. And I installed AMD MiniAGP port driver. I'm completely clueless on why my playback is worse quality.

The quality won't be any better, the image will just be smaller. DIVX movies will still be the same resolution they were encoded at.

Did you check to make sure video hardware acceleration is set to full? Windows might have set it default one notch under max.

quality is much better.. right? Or so you claim.. heh.. its not that its stuttering, right?

Are you both looking at it in the same room and everything? It could be the trinitron is just giving better colors.

The problem could be your video card, what's the resolution of the movie your playing? Some ATI and Matrox cards will not start the video overlay(which accelerates the video)if the vertical or horizontal resolution is not a multiple of 16. To see if your cards is starting the video overlay just reduce your color depth to 8bit and then start the movie. If the colors are messed up then the video overlay isn't working. I know theres a fix for Matrox's cards but I'm not sure anyone has fixed this problem with ATI's cards.
