Older board, ABIT VL6 and sound trouble

I am rebuilding a system for inlaws that uses an older ABIT VL6 MB-PIII 933 processor, 192MB RAM, 20GB HDD, etc. They were using the onboard sound in this system before with WinME. I did update to the latest BIOS. After getting XP Pro loaded, the onboard sound wouldn't work. I went back into the BIOS and unchecked it, rechecked it and saved and exit the BIOS. Still no go. In Device Mgr all looks fine and there are no conflicts, yellow X's and all say "working correctly". In the control panel it shows the sounds as there (not grayed out) and you can click on the "play" arrow. Funny thing is that doing this causes the arrow to turn into the square "stop" button (as normal) but it stays this way instead of turning back into the play arrow almost immediatly. Weird. I have tried installing a SB 16 PCI sound card and it does the same thing; installs fine and shows the same as above. I changed the sound cable going from the CDROM to the MB and/or Sound card even though that shouldn't effect the system sounds. I tried both non-powered and powered speakers. I am at a loss. I even tried reinstalling the 4-in-1's. Tried to download and install just the via audio drivers but it said the AC97 was not there. This was with the onboard sound. So then I went back to check the BIOS. All were enabled but I still disabled, then enabled the onboard sound, just to be sure. No joy.
Anyone with any ideas, I would be very grateful. Tnanks!
