Older AT compatible HDD

Hello All,

Newer geek here - it's been awhile since I've played with these things.

I have a celeron on an atx motherboard. I tried to boot the system with an older WD caviar, at compatible 1gig HDD. The bios will let me configure it manually as the Prim Master. However, it won't boot the windows 95 OS that I have installed on it. It works fine with my older socket7 pentium on a full size AT. The older AT reports that it's formatted to FAT16. Boots and runs great.


Any ideas?

Is the HD itself jumpered properly as the master?

Is it trying to boot Windows and then failing, or not trying at all?

Win95 doesn't adapt to hardware changes well at all so trying and failing would not be surprising. Using F8 to force safe mode might work.
 
Right after the POST it just comes up as no OS found.

Could this be a hardware conflict somehow? As in - the chipset on the MB just won't work with the older technology?

Newer chipsets should be backward compatible with all the IDE/ATA standards and the sort-of standards that Western Digital called EIDE.

What kind of mainboard is the new system? I assume that since you're working with it in the BIOS it's running on the primary system chipset, not an add-in chip which many newer boards use.

Does the BIOS auto-detect the settings for cylinders, heads, sectors, or does it detect it as being in LBA mode, or "large drive" mode? Make sure that the configuration matches what is used with the older board. Once it's formatted in a particular mode, it isn't usable in a different mode I think.
 
I thought the same way about the backwards compatibillity. I have to manually put in the cyl, hds, etc.

The new system is a celeron. Didn't pay that much attention to the board/socket type.

Many WD drives have TWO Master settings: one for stand-alone (only drive on the cable), and one for Master with slave. This causes much hair pulling.
