Hey guys; I have a 2 year old rig and am desperately needing to make some upgrades. I'm looking at an i5-2500k on a MSI P67A-GD65 (Combo on NewEgg). As usual, I'm trying to do things as cheaply as possible ... I'm wondering if anyone has input on my old powersupply being enough for my new settup....

My old supply is an FSP-Group 500w Blue Storm. I'm considering upgrading my graphics card as well. . . Maybe a 550-560 Geforce. . . Or I was even looking at an Radeon 6850.

Will my old Powersupply....

A) Run the i5 on the MSI P67A with my current video card (8800 GTS... I know, LONG overdue!).

and

B) Run the i5/MSI P67A with either a 550 Geforce or a Radeon 6850?

Thanks a ton for taking the time to answer! I'm WAY out of the loop and I know you guys will steer me straight.

How old is old? I saw a Jonnyguru review from 2008 for the BlueStormII. That's not that bad if yours is from about the same time.

Be aware...it's not a GREAT PSU to begin with...but also isn't terrible.

It SHOULD be up to the task.

Boomer; I ordered the parts for the rig I'm currently typing on in June of 2009. So it's just over 2 years old. I just glanced at the box (I save my hardware boxes because I'm weird) and it says "BlueStorm 500" on it.

2 years old should be fine.
Blue Storm II was the only review I saw on JG in a quick search.
(you're not the only weirdo who saves boxes...) :p

Thanks for the input guys! This is obviously an area where I can save a few dollars and not have to pony up for a new PSU!

The 6850 is a pretty efficient card. If you go that route you should be fine.

Edit: From what I can tell it might actually use less power than the 8800gts

FSP makes more supplies than many of the more advertised companies combined. While not the ultimate supply, they sell quite a lot to OEMS.

Can't really go that wrong with FSP. While generally not giving kick-ass performance, their PSUs perform within spec and won't take out your parts / burn down your house like a lot of blue light special brands (*cough* PowMax, CoolMax, Diablotek *cough*)

Many yrs back i got 500W FSP Blue Storm for 939 it lasted I week and killed my new 800xtpe.
Got tired waiting for the FSP rma and got a ocz520adj ps which is still running.

Now I need to run off a 2500k out of case so I use the rma 500W FSP BS.
Run Linx at 3600,3800,4000,4200hmz good.
Next I try Linx @ 4400hmz runs less then 30 sec and trips BS ps 2x.
Put the Z68+2500k in a case with ocz 520 ps.
Ran LinX at 4864hmz at 1.43v no problems.

The 500W FSP Blue Storm only has two 12v 17amp lines.
My ocz 520adj 36a single 12v line was the first and last good ocz ps.
