HDDs do not have slots, the standards are backwards compatible, and any ATA over ATA66 is diminishing returns for the most part.

Short answer - Yes.

Your motherboard cannot "only" have ATA/133. ATA/133 isn't even really a sandard. It's used only by Maxtor AFAIK. Some chipset manufacturers however have implemented support for ATA/133 in their chipsets. This doesn't mean that ATA/100 and below drives won't work. They will definitely work, barring any drive/connector/etc faults. For the most part, ATA/100 is more than enough, and ATA/133 doesn't offer much, if any, improvement over ATA/100 simply coz the only drives that support it are from Maxtor, and Maxtor just doesn't have as fast drives as their competitors from Hitach and WD.

There is no difference between how fast a hard drive will run between ATA100 AND ATA133. Since neither type of hard drive can send data faster than the ATA100 speed, there is no way to take advantage of it. It takes too long to read and write the data than it does to transmit it. Now if you had 4 hard drives all running at once in RAID there may be some advantage, otherwise you can not get the drives to go fast enough to need more throughput.
