Old XP system shows blank screen after load

Ive run into a problem with an older xp pc of mine that shows a blank screen after the loading screen shows up. I have tried going into safe mode, but safe mode halts after about half way, i believe its right before the vga driver would be loaded, but not sure.

So far, i have tried to switch out video cards, but no change. I also used a different hard drive and installed windows and was able to use that just fine, so it doesn't seem to be the video card hardware. I booted into the recovery console and did a chkdsk and it does say it fixed a couple of issues, but nothing changes. I eve tried a repair install, but that did nothing either.

I tried to select 'last known good configuration' at startup, but that did nothing. I also tried 'vga mode' but it also resulted in a blank screen after the loading screen.

I pulled the drive and hooked it up to another pc to run tests on it. The hard drive tests good, but i did find several pieces of spyware and viruses, so that could have caused some driver problem. I cleaned everything that I found, but the damage is still done. Any ideas how I can get back into windows? I thought that if it was a bad driver, i could just hook this up to another pc and replace it, but are there any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I'd probably give up at this point and just do a clean install.
Most you'll lose is the registry so you'll have to reinstall a few programs.
Since you have quite a bit of spyware and virus, I'd probably backup and format, then do a clean install.

blank as in black?, grey, blue??...try a repair install IF you have your data under another account other than administrator!
