McCain voters defecting to Obama are older white males

In today's highly polarized political environment it is somewhat surprising to find voters who backed John McCain in 2008 and now support President Barack Obama, but they exist.

Roughly 5 percent of respondents in Reuters/Ipsos polls said they chose the Republican contender in 2008 and will switch to Obama in 2012.

Jeff Waltrip, 56, is a retired electrician and retail worker who has voted Republican all his life. But in his view Obama "has done a good job with what he was left with, and I truly believe that allowing Mitt Romney in there is going to make the world a whole lot worse than it is now."

Holliday, a 58-year-old retiree from Convis Township, Michigan. "Romney has changed his position so many damn times, you don't know what he thinks at all. But they're both liars."

Holliday said that in general he leans Republican. "I did vote for McCain four years ago in spite of the fact he picked Palin. Because I thought that was a cheap trick he pulled there." He worries that if Romney is elected he will put "Cheney and Rumsfeld back in there to run the show."

Jeffrey Baker, 56, a retiree in Strong, Maine is unhappy with the entire campaign. "There's nothing going on. No information, no nothing," he said. "Everybody says they're going to do this, they're going to do that. But nobody says how they're going to do it."

He's basing his vote on a general sense that "Obama is more for the whole country than Romney is," alluding to the leaked video. "Romney, that's his honest feelings. He doesn't really care about the 47 percent."

"A Democratic official said the other big worry for the Obama campaign is that when you dig into the small slice of undecided voters (probably only 6 percent to 8 percent of the electorate, according to the campaigns), the demographics are not favorable to Obama: mostly white, many with some college education, economically stressed, largely middle-aged.

“Many of them voted for Obama in 2008 and felt good about that vote, and still think Obama’s a good person who really tried hard, but the economy sucks for them,” said the Democratic official, who has access to reams of internal polls and focus groups.

Despite that, Obama officials have maintained for several weeks that there are too few undecided voters for Romney to get the bounce he needs from the debates.

“Romney is not going to win undecided voters 4-to-1,” a senior administration official told reporters on Air Force One on Friday. “If you are losing in Ohio by 4 or 5 points and trailing in Colorado by 2 points, if you are trailing in Nevada by 2 or 3 points, you are not going to win in those states."

That makes sense. Retired people tend to vote for whoever they think is going to give them more of whatever they want.

Well, considering that Romney would raise taxes and order his treasury sec to print more money plus regulate the hell out of everything to temporarily increase GDP mostly at the expense of the elderly, then it makes sense the latter would like to vote for Obama.

It's really fucked up how Dr. Paul was the only one who would've balanced the budget without even doing means testing for the wealthiest elderly. He would've even restored what was cut from medicare FFS.

The Savior of America was defeated and it really sucks and makes me angry, sad, and kind of want to shove my foot up Romney's ass but then I don't really want to do that because he smells worse than anyone else alive I'm sure. Thomas Jefferson is the Creator, but he could not Save the majority he loved so much.

I'm a Republican and the fact that Romney changes his position so many times and is a blatant liar is making me back Obama. With Obama, at least I know where he stands. With Romney, it's impossible to know what you'll get. And Romney running for president to lower his own tax rate is sickening to me. Very sickening.

Huh? Romney repeatedly tells seniors "Your SS benefits won't change, only people who are young now will get screwed"

They won't be voting anyway because it's too much of a burden for them to get ID. Pay attention people!

I'm a registered democrat and the fact that the obama changes his position so many times and is a blatant liar is making me back the Romney. With the Romney, at least I know where he stands. With the obama, it's impossible to know what you'll get. And the obama running for president to appease the eco-KOOKS and hate America mobs with structured liberal deceptions supported by willing accomplices in the media and hollywood is a disaster in the making with current events in his reckless foreign policy a prime example.

fact of the matter..the obama foreign policy is a case study in failure and deception tactics window dressed as success. Very similar to his domestic policy. And waiting in the shadows are massive junk science EPA policies that will spell doom for the economy and jobs.
