Old to new psu

I have been out of building computers for a while and need some information.

I have a old pc running a p35 mb and a q6600 quad cpu. The power supply just took a crap. I am starting to get a list together of components to build a new system but was wondering if I buy a new psu for this pc will it be compatible with the current mb available.

If it was I figured if I could replace the psu in the old pc then could run that until I could get the funds together to build a modern pc. I use my pc for photography and right now some of my photos are stuck in a dead machine.

Thanks

It should be as long as you buy a quality one in the first place, matched with enough power to handle whatever you intend to build (i.e., processor OC, GPU(s).) You didn't list any of your specs, we don't know what you have now, what system you have now, or what you are thinking of for the future. There are some generic answers we can give, but we need a few more details...

Right now I was just concerned with the psu being compatible as I am just starting to research into what specs I would want for a new build.

The system that died was running:

Gigabyte GA-P35- DS3L
Intel Core2quad q6600
4gb Crucial DDR2
LG Blu-ray burner
Pioneer Dvd Burner
4 Seagate SATA 7200 rpm HD
Nvidia 630gt PCI-E

The PSU that died was a Antec 430 watt Truepower Trio

Short answer: Yes. :)

A generic recommendation for a modern build with a single mid- to high-end GPU would be 500-600W, that would work with your current system as well until you decide to upgrade.

Thanks guys, now I have to read through the post I saw with a list of psu and ratings. I am sure I will be back with more questions or recommendations as I progress with a build.

If you want to save some time, just make a post in General Hardware with your current system and what you expect to replace it with (even generalized parts... i.e. 'GTX970' or 'GTX980 SLI') and where you expect to buy it from... and someone will point you in the right direction, or at least give you a few options.

The PSU market has changed a bit, recently, the lists I see aren't very current. Just FYI.

Is your photography performing well on your PC? If you don't game and that's all you use it for, there might not be a real need to rebuild. A new PSU may be all you really need.

Yes this computer had been performing little to no hesitation with photoshop and lightroom. I was considering upgrading it if I upgrade my camera since working with 28MB raw files would slow this machine down. The failed psu is just a step in that direction.
