K,

We have a simple file server that we run at work that has an old TNT AGP card (totally not sure what flavour but it doesn't matter). Anyways, the card has a very basic HSF setup. A small thin heatsink with a fan screwed on the top. The fan started making terrible noises, so I found an old fan that's exactly the same size and threw it on. Unfortunately, the screws didn't fit perfectly, so the fan is sitting about 1/4 of an inch off of the heatsink.

Obviously we're not going to be running any 3D apps as it's just a file server, but it is important that the server stays up and doesn't have any down time for replacing video cards, fans, etc. I know that a lot of those basic cards come with passive heatsinks and run just fine. Do you think that having the fan sit a tiny bit away from the heatsink will cause any problems?

You shouldn't have any problem as my TNT 2 MODEL 64 runs with only a passive heatsink and I've run "heavy" 3d apps (games) on it even when ambient temperature reached around 40ºc (I'm in spain)

My TNT (Diamond Viper V550) only had a small passive heatsink on it. No active cooling should be required.

Having the fan that much above the heatsink should be fine. A friend of mine has my old GF2 GTS...I scotch taped a little Pentium fan to the HSF...worked fine (as in, gaming fine). A TNT should have no problems.
