Glad to have you Luca! What's your username, I'll add you to my friend's list!

I'm still quite noobish myself and (as much as I am embarrassed to admit it) I mostly play against bots, especially with another buddy who is brand new.

I'm ItsaMamaLuigi, same as my Xbox Live gamertag. Might be up for a little tonight but it's hard to say, I don't have a ton of time because I've been going to bed pretty early lately.

Pfft, I was in bed at 9:45 last night so no issues there (the joys of waking up at 5:30 with my wife when I don't "need" to get up until 7). I typically can't play for hours at a time but I do try to get at least one game in a day to get the "first win of the day" IP bonus.

My handle is "ikabobi"

So me and a buddy have been playing a lot and doing very well in particular over the last few days running a Lee Sin and Taric/Blitz lane. We just started playing LoL maybe a month ago, I'm currently level 21 working my way towards 30.

Just started my first Rune Page since I can now get good runes. Right now I'm getting Apen Reds, Flat Armor Yellows and thinking about Mres Blues with Flat HP quints. Seems to be a pretty standard good on almost everyone page. I was a TDA Dota player for several years so I feel like I caught on pretty quick.

Anyway question time, with level 30 comes ranked games and draft picks. Would you guys prioritize hero acquisition over rune acquisition or visa versa for the levels 20-30 grind? The way I see it right now you need to have heroes in order to play roles and I know most of the roles are playable by 1350 IP heroes so ideally it doesn't take long to get a solid base of heroes up, but some of the premier role type heroes seem to be in the 3150-6300 range and those do take awhile to get. Shen/Corki come to mind right away. That said I'm pretty sure not being runed out at 30 would be a huge disadvantage.

Just for background info I currently have something like 10 heroes, maining Lee Sin, Sion, Le Blanc and Amumu.

Edit: Also feel free to add me if you're into normal games haha, City of Delusion is my summoner name.

From what I've heard runes > heroes. That said, getting one or two heroes in each role that you're comfortable with is a huge plus. But what do I know, I'm a lowly noob.

I got 300-some IP from the two comp-stomps I played yesterday. Looked at runes, no idea what to get. There are so many of them and I don't even know what they do or how to use them!

Ideally it's better to have your runes at lvl 30 than to have more characters. Also if you're goign to be grabbing more characters for ranked play, keep in mind that there are characters that are constantly banned i.e shen and rammus so don't worry about picking those guys up too quickly. A good set of runes can make a big difference early game and once you finish your first set it becomes very easy to finish up other sets for your other roles.

It took me forever to finish up my initial set which was a mage rune page. mpen/hp5/lvl(vlad)/cdr/hp quint but afterwards it was really easy to swap that into a physical dps page and the later tank page now I have one for pretty much any role.

If you're past lvl 20 start picking up tier 3 runes for your most played character(s). Look up some guides on how to build them and start there. If you're under 20 i would personally save that IP for later but if you really have to get some go with tier 1 runes. Never buy tier 2 runes as they are not worth the money.

300 IP is nice for 2 games but runes will be a major drain on your IP as you get higher in your lvls.

Example: 9x Arpen marks= 3780 IP, 9x CDR glyphs = 7380 IP, 3x HP quints = 6120 IP

Get your runes tat 30 first. You really only need three rune pages though for each major "role" you want.

Here are the three pages I currently have.

1) Tank role
2) Caster Role
3) AD DPS role

Building up three pages for those is really all you need. You CAN tailor them down some to individual champs, but you can most certainly get by very well with 3 pages for each of these roles.

After that then you can get your champs. Ideally you want 2 or three champs for each of these primary jobs.

1) Tank
2) Support
3) Jungle
4) DPS AP
5) DPS AD

Those are the 5 primary jobs of any given character. Many characters can do more than one job at a time to some degree. Those characters that can do multiple jobs and do them well are also typically the banned ones so be careful. Others here have pointed out their lists for what champs to pick for these jobs and for the most part they are pretty good picks.

Okay I will just save up. I am level 2 or 3, lol.

Maybe we could just start a new thread and have the mods close this one? We could have the first post have names and mini-guide?

I PM'd Keith and he said he can merge this thread into a new one, so I'll get a first post together that's full of info for new players and old alike.

Don't even buy runes yet. At your level buy some solid champions. If you REALLY enjoy the game you can pick up the retail copy of the game which includes 20 champions, 4 runes, and 1350 RP. But you can get everything in the game (minus skins) without ever spending a dime.

Get a few of the 450 IP champions, I'd start with Ashe and Ryze, then maybe Master Yi.

Once you hit lvl 20 you'll start looking at runes as you unlock Tier 3 runes then. No point in buying lots of low level runes that you'll want to get rid of once you hit lvl 20.

Okay I will just save up. I am level 2 or 3, lol.

I think the "just starting out" levels are the most fun.

Good idea.

Whats so good about maokai? People have told me hes just a meh tank with healing abilities, i am in ELO hell though where people have told me they are the walrus and they live in a hedge etc so i should probably give maokai a shot. I did find those saplings a pita to deal with when laning vs him.

IMO Maokai's main strength is his very strong early game. He can really help feed his lane partner and bust the tower early in the game. By playing to his laning partner's strengths and assisting them getting kills he can create a lot of momentum for his team. Then mid game he excels at ganking with his root and slow. Then late game he is a great initiator forcing a team fight, and then dropping his ult.

With his recent buff, he has great survivability without needing a lot of items. This allows your lanemate to get all the minion kills without majorly starving you.

The problem with Maokai is that he is very dependent on his teammates. If your lane partner early doesn't coordinate well with you, there will be no killing or first blood. Mid game you will initiate ganks that they don't follow through on quickly enough and thus preventing a kill. If you don't have the strong early game, your late game is pretty poor. Easy to ignore you in team fights and kill everybody else.

Don't bother with runes until you are level 20. Save up your IP for the tier 3 runes you will buy then. A.) you don't waste IP on the low level ones. B.) By level 20 you have a much better idea of what you need to buy. Read over the last few posts and you'll see some good recommendations on what runes to buy at that point.

Finally got to 300 wins in unranked, about a year after i reached 200 wins. Guess taking a long ass break from the game doesn't help. I also reached +80 win margin on the same game. Wonder if it will take me another year to get 400 wins.

http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-l...at-secondary-and-primary-means-and-more-24255

just in general you can't fail with:

marks: ArPen for AD chars - MPen for AP
seals: armor for junglers - dodge for AD - mp/5 for AP (unless its kennen/vlad etc)
glyphs: CDR works for all classes really. i have mag resist/lvl for my junglers
quints: HP works for all. ArPen/MPen are other good choices.

edit: once you really start to save up IP and buy more rune pages that's when you can start tailoring each rune page for specific chars. like ryze needs MP and not so much MP/5. kennen/vlad dont need mana regen (i use HP/lvl on them). trynd benefits from crit runes, etc etc. but until then just going with the basics for each AD/AP/jungler you have should suffice

I wouldn't buy any champs besides 450IP champs if I wasn't level 30. Just my advice, save it all for at least 2 full runepages (AD and AP), then buy your favorite champs. You really don't know the game until you know most of the champs. The more time spend utilizing champs in the rotations, the better. As much fun as it might be to run out and buy a champ you did well with, it's in your own best interest.
