I got in trouble today because I posted in the thread that was prominently on the front page of a forum, evidently the General Hardware forum:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=457191

I had done no searching, nothing that would filter the list to dig up an old thread. I had posted in two forums today only, General Hardware (a couple of threads I started yesterday), and Operating Systems (I started a thread there today).

I got a warning a few minutes ago from a Super Moderator saying I'm in trouble for digging up an old thread and posting in it and I better not do it again. I had no idea it was an old thread. It discussed some operating system issues, I read many of the posts in the thread and I made a brief post, not realizing that the thread was from 2001.

I believe there's some glitch in the software that put this thread on the front page.
Again, I did no searching, nothing that would put an old thread on the front page. I do have my account configured to show all threads, not just the last day or two or month, however I had done nothing to bring up old stuff. :\

Muse,

I'm sorry you thought I was giving you a warning. Nothing of the kind. I thought it was funny and I figured that it might be some kind of bug. Or you'd just lost your mind. If it was a warning, I'd have made it clear.

Please accept my apologies if I gave you the wrong idea.

Best wishes,

Oh, no problem, it wasn't you. It was ViRGE (a different Super Moderator) who came down pretty heavily on me with a stern warning. I was taken aback, didn't realize what had happened and I PMed him back (it was all PM stuff) asking what I'd done wrong. The warning was some generic warning concerning posting in the wrong forum (!!). He then told me the inappropriate warning was boilerplate but I'd resurrected a thread from 2001 and it was a big no no. I'd had no idea. I certainly didn't do anything to even put it in front of my face and I think it's a glitch in the system, probably having to do with my having configured my account to show all threads, no matter how old. Many times threads years old are quite valuable. Just being a few years old doesn't mean they have lost all relevance. In any case I wouldn't have posted in that thread if I'd realized that the last post was in 2001!
