Old System to Media Computer and building a new system

Two part question

1. Core i7 920 2.66, 6GB RAM, ASUS P6T, ATI HD 4890, 2x1TB RAID 0 + 1x1TB for media. Raid 0 is running slow ... not sure why. CPU runs REALLY hot. just cleaned and new thermo grease etc. and still runs Prime95 ~95C. Any changes needed to hook it up to the TV (DVI - HDMI converter) and stream Icefilms.info? Have an Apple TV, but not happy.

2. Looking to build a new system after this is gone. will be in Spain. Budget $1500. Will keep SyncMaster 245T. Run games at 1900x1200.

What kind of cooler is on that?? That's insanely hot. If you're going to run a Media Computer, perhaps a quiet aftermarket CPU cooler is an option?

stock cooler and tons of case fans. I know stock cooler is bad, but can it be that bad?

Sure the cooler is seated properly? Cleaning ALL the old thermal grease off to have 2 smooth surfaces? Then a small pea-sized drop of new thermal grease before re-attaching?

si, just did it yesterday and re-tested (the guy at the shop did it). Frustrating ... totally of course can't OC

is it at all possible it's the wrong temp being reported? that's just crazy.

bios reports 50C no load and with a tiny overclock Core Temp easily hits 104C on Core 0 in 20 seconds. no more OC

as for the heat. ouch.

how do you have the fans pointed in your system, do you have both intake and out take fans? is there any shroud over?

when you dont run prime what are the system temps?

Thanks very much for the link and temp advice. Desktop windows is max 55C. Fans all ok. thinking I just have a bummed chip

Try undervolting. At each step, verify it's stable with Prime95. If you can't get the temp low enough you can also underclock. (I know, heresy! )

That's not a bummed chip, that's either the fans blowing air in a way that causes poor circulation to the CPU or the cooler not attached properly. If it's doing that and those two are right, RMA the chip or have your shop fix it right. The system will not last a year running those kinds of temps for no reason. Stop passing off that sort of problem and fix it first before moving on.

I imagine your "raid is running slow" because the cpu is throttling back to prevent overheating. It won't last transcoding media as an HTPC. Fix it.

Or returning to stock volts. A failed/forgotten OC might have left the core voltage obscenely high.

Slightly underclocked, auto voltages and P95 hits 90C in 30 seconds. Taking 'er back to the shop.

Got P95 to a max. of 80C with a set cpu voltage of 1.1000.

Temperatures that high are not likely to be a fan issue. You only see those kind of temps if your CPU cooler isn't making contact properly.

Good point. A cold heatsink is much more indicative of a problem than a burning hot one.

just finished installing a TRUE & 2 more 120mm case fans. 40C idle max 60C prime 95 on max stress & heat. good result!! (?)

Good enough that the chip will survive. Seems that chip has a 130W TDP! So that may be all you're going to get.

60C max is pretty damn good for a 920. :thumbsup:
