Old system new problem

Hi
I've gotten a lot of good advise here before so I figured I'd bring my latest issue to the experts. I know it will be hard to impossible to get an answer but I figure it's worth a try (the other option being getting a new computer which I probably need but would rather wait).

I have a couple of games that I play on the computer which is an old 1.4G T-bird ~5.5 years old. 768Meg of Ram, I think at 5200 Nvida Vcard (can't remember). Recently these games don't start. There is no error message, they being to launch and nothing happens. Older games and other applications seem fine. For the life of me I can't think of what could do this. I've done full reinstalls without success. I'm concerned that this is a sign that something is going wrong but all indications are that the system is working perfectly aside from this.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

Dave

What particular programs do and do not work? For example, can you run any 3D game? Or do they all crash?

With all that old hardware, it's possible something is failing, hard drive or PSU or something... Personally I'd take the whole machine apart and put it back together again completely clean and dust free with new thermal paste and such. If you've done that already, run hard drive diagnostics, and memtest while you're at it.

Now that I think about it I believe both of the games that didnt run were 3D or pseudo 3D...

Thanks for the advice, I'll open up the box tomorrow morning and see if there is anything that looks messy

Try reinstalling your video card drivers along with the latest DirectX.

Also you might want to make sure the cooling on the vid card is still fully functional.

Well I managed to fix this by downloading the Windows updates. I guess one of the files got corrupted and the download overwrote it. But I'll never know which one.

The good news is I don't need a new computer now. The bad news is I started looking and what's out there is very appealing. Least now I have time to decide what I want and where to get it. I can probably even wait if there are changes on the horizon.

Thanks again for the help
