I have an old crappy system
P-MMX 133 upgraded to K6-2 333mhz
80mb ram
2.1gig
etc.

it has winme installed, and I am unable to connect to the internet through IE because it freezes every time I start it. (iexplore has caused and error in unknown...) I also cannot connect to Aol instant messenger or anything else...

the network adapter is connecting to the router and is assigned the right IP address. (verified through winipcfg) I have reinstalled drives for the network adapter, it has tcp/ip installed, and i have basically determined that it is not the cause of the problem... (its an Intel Pro1000MT Gigabit, and probably worth more than the system itself...)

anyone have any ideas? (other than sack up and buy a better system for $100?)

here's something I don't get - when it asks if I want to send an error report, if I say yes, theres no problem hooking up to the server and sending the error report???

i can ping or tracert only the ip of my wireless accesspoint/router (to which the pc is connected by a wire)...

anything else says "unable to resolve" or "unknown host"

You might try checking this out. You may have something corrupted that one of these fixes may help.

How attached are you to the load of windows that is on it? You might try reloading. Or finding a small hard drive and installing windows on it, to see if it is something with the original install of windows.

Ip repair

I would actually put windows 2k or 98 on it. ME is just a whole IE problem causer.

I've fixed many computers (roughly 60) with WinME and the way I fixed them was to install XP, 98, or 2000. :) and surprisingly enough (yeah right) the problems each of these computers had involved IE or anything network oriented. Your problem is fixable but I guarantee it will happen again. You need to uninstall IE, or remove it's path from the registry and all the directories and then reinstall it. You also need to reinstall your NIC or modem (whatever access you're using). You might also need to check your BIOS settings if you're using a NIC. Make sure wake-up on LAN is turned off and there are no IRQ conflicts. Of course this doesn't "always" work... which is where the installation of a different (better) OS comes in. :) Sorry to dissapoint you but you're using a very evil OS at the moment.

2k will work fine on that machine

A Pentium II 300 MHz CPU
Minimum of 64 Megs of RAM
4-gig harddrive
CD ROM Drive

Edit: not sure on the hard drive space thing
