Old School - What's the fastest P3 that runs on the 100 MHz bus that's avaliable?

One of my computers is currently running a Celeron 566 and desperatly needs some more horsepower. Most of the memory is PC100 and overclocking is *NOT* an option. What's the fastest FCPGA Pentium 3 that operates at a 100 MHz bus that is reasonably prices? I know the 1000Mhz+ chips are priced insanely high, but is there something in the 700-900 category that's priced fairly?

Where do you see that? I see $78.

Also, I think I might just buy a 1Ghz P3 FCPGA and just underclock it. Someone is selling at on of them on ebay right now and looks like they're gonna go for ~$40 each.

That would only run at 750 anyway though with the locked multiplier at 7.5 wouldn't it? If you are thinking of underclocking the 133 bus P3, I mean.

True, but we're talking double the price for 100 more Mhz (which, admittedy, at this range is a 12% difference) so I think I can live with the underclocked chip.

BTW, I've always been under the impression that the double sized cache makes MUCH more of a difference then the extra clockspeed. Is this true?

actually, the coppermine (256k) p3 is considerably faster per clock than the previous (dont remember the core, but 512k) p3. this is due to the coppermine's full-core speed l2 cache, as opposed to the half-core speed cache on previous models. the tualitin (sp?) is a combination of the good parts of both, with 512k full-core speed cache. so if one is a tualitin, get it.

Why not one of the Celeries that run at 100MHz FSB like the 800, 850 etc? Or even better a Tually Celeron with a cheap $9 adapter. A 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 Celeron would give that machine a whole new life. BTW, there were P3-1000 that ran on 100MHz FSB. They're just harder to find.

Yeah, you're right, I didn't bother to open the category where it says 850 P3 for $29.

You said overclocking wasn't an option, but you have one of the most famous Celeron overclocking processors. Put it on a 100MHz fsb and run 850MHz for free.

Two things crippled the coppermine celeron.

One was the 66MHz fsb. (which overclocking fixes)
The second was it only has half the L2 cache and it was only 4-way associative instead of 8-way like the P3 counterpart.

When the fsb speeds are equal between a Celeron and a P3 (coppermine core) the actual performance difference is around 10-15%.

Roger That.
Get an Upgradeware Slot-T and a Tually basd Celeron. 1.1 - 1.4 GHz

Katmai core has the 512kb of closely coupled L2 cache. Coppermine had the 256kb on die L2 cache.

Yeah, that would work @ 750 MHz, but is far from "What's the fastest P3 that runs on the 100 MHz bus that's avaliable?"

how about this ?

P3 900
Pentium lll Phillippines
900/256/100/1.7v
7047A184-0329 SL4SD
$80.00 obo

but it's a PIII 1GHz for $27..... so it's a fantastic deal.
hell I thought about buying all 10 for PC's around the office, I know they could get used, and I could probably turn a profit from it also.

Yes, a very good deal indeed! edit. Its an auction. Prices are going up.

That was the Katmai and it fit onto the Slot 1 interconnect so I don't think it applies in this situation anyway.
