Old school type keyboards? I love that 'click click' sound!

Does anyone use one of the old school keyboards that make "click-click" sounds when typing? Its hard to find now-a-days since most of the keyboards have those muddy softkeys. I have seen some really nice dell keyboards (very simple and no extra shortcut keys) but I dont know if I can get one of those under 20 $.

I too enjoy a keyboard without 20 or 30 multimedia buttons.
I usually find them at Wal-mart or Kmart for about 10 bucks.

Sometimes you can get them at Staples or Office Depot. Just ask the stock boy for the cheapest keyboard they have.

You may find that the "clicky" type keyboards exactly are NOT cheap ... this is because the individual key switches cost way more money than a big rubber mat.

Short of getting an abandoned model-M for nearly free, $20 won't take you there.

Won't disagree with what anyone said---but I do wish to point my new pet peeve are these keyboards with keys logo's that are painted on--inside of a few months they simply wear off.

If you're looking at the keys, then there's something fundamentally wrong with your typing anyway :D

re. paint wearing off. I agree! I don't look at them when I type (thanks to Mavis - click the link in my sig for your own copy) but they look nasty when I happen to see them when I'm not typing. Have to pay good money to get a kbd with the nice double-shot keytops anymore - pretty hard to find too...

How come whenever people crap on my opinion its called "mature discussion" but whenever I crap on someone elses opinion I'm an "immature asshole in need of vacation".

Is everybody friends with a mod except for me?

Seriously, when you recommend a $10 product to someone who asks for mechanical excellence, what kind of response do you expect?

I have about 5 IBM Model M keyboards. I have converted all of them to Dvorak layout, I would like my keyboards to all be completely blank ... however, I have a feeling that spray paint would wear out. And buying blank key caps for the Model M is pricy.

I'd recommend buying surplus model M keyboards from Ebay. You can usually get them for under $40 there. Otherwise there are places that will sell them new, but they go for around $100 to $120.

The tactile feel is great.
There are no stupid windows keys.
The clicky noise can be a bit annoying at times, however, I've gotten used to it, as have my co-workers in the cubes near me at work.

I plan on sticking with Model M keyboards for the remainder of my life.

The Das Keyboard is a dumb idea (blank keytops), IMO. But if you want to pay the money, the DK II has Cherry mechanical key switches and the original DK should be selling for more like what the basis for it does (Keytronics 3600 series, ~$20.). http://www.daskeyboard.com . Hmmm, the 'DK I' has only dropped $10. Cut out pieces of black electrical tape instead of paying these prices.

... and either of them are rubber mat types, not separate-switches clickety keyboards.

No, the Cherry switch boards (DK II) are separate, gold contact, mech switches. Clickety clack. Pretty stiff too.

Here's a twist on the same question:

Old school mechanical wireless keyboards?

Loved my northgate omnikey while it worked but looking for a wireless upgrade to my trusty saitek. (keys too mushy).

I can't recall seeing a wireless kbd with mechanical switches. Often mech switches are set in a metal pan that can resist the extra pressure of mech switches so it makes them heavier than most membrane or rubber dome switch kbds.

The keyboards that Dell offers for businesses, and the Optiplex ones are pretty nice. Very minimalistic, and black. :) Only part is that they don't have the old click, they're more of the soft type.

A good keyboard is at least $100. I paid $125 for mine and it was worth every penny. Mechanical key switches, 24 function keys across the top, and the best part, 12 function keys on the LEFT side where God intended them to be. Any key can be remapped to any location, and the key caps can pe pulled and rearanged. I love that keyboard. The only thing wrong with it is that it's HUGE.
