Old School PIII Dual 600 Machine Temps?

Hey all, my second in command PC that I use alot, is a relic of sorts, a Compaq AP400 Dual PIII 600 Workstation. I was fiddling around with Everest today, and noticed that the CPU's are running @ 61+ degrees C under load. (I know there is a bit of desparity in software sensed numbers) But still Can the old PIII Slot 1 CPU's handle these temps? (Non coppermine, 512K Half speed Cache.)

It's been a while, but I think those temps are perfectly normal for a P3, I wouldn't worry about it. Love your sig by the way. My pentium-d seems to have lost it's second core, and can't find it. Good thing my main rig is an X2.

so, those are the Katmai cores....

I believe those are acceptable temperatures.... I remember having an old PII 350 way back in the day, and the heatsink was three times the size of the CPU...

On the otherhand, if those were the Coppermine cores, then I believe those temperatures would be a little on the high side.. (usually in the 40's C range for those)

Exactly, i had a dual 600E system, they were coppermines and under load were never over 45*C, if those are katmais built on the .25 process then i think that might be normal. Im pretty sure my old coppermines were .18, could be wrong.

I have katmai cores on my dual 600 slot 1 machine. I had dual p2 350s in it and they ran fine, but the way tyan setup the board, the slots are right on top of each other. I had to switch to active cooling on the p3's to keep them stable, but my temps are pretty cool, not up around 61.

You mentioned that it's an older machine. Have you cracked it open and cleared the dust inside? There's probably a ton of dust on the heatsink as well. This will help drop your temps a bit.

Yup, I maintain my main rigs' hardware very well, de-dust them frequently, upgrades if I got tem, etc. The CPU's are the older KAtmai cores, .25 process BTW...

The cooling setup in this compaq is a bit odd IMO. The two CPUS, lay flat against the Motherboard, (not plugged in upright like normal Sot 1 CPUs) They both have modest passive heatsinks on them, and there is on 92mm fan in the front of the case that blows across them both via a plastic shroud, I've never had any instability problems at all with this machine, so I guess the temps can't be too bad.. Unfortunately there is nothing I can really do to enhance the cooling if I wanted to, short of buying a leaf blower 92mm fan for it.

LOL thats one sorry ASCII Drawing but you get the idea. The PS exhaust fan is the only other fan in the system.
