So, we picked up an old school original nintendo at a garage sale for $5 with a bunch of games, Super Mario 3 seems to work, but the rest won't let the machine start.
Anyone know a good trick to get them going, or the best way to fix it? Of course we've tried the "Blow in the cartridge" trick, even though I don't think that really does anything.

q-tips and rubbing alcohol on the cart connection. Try slidding the game back and forth a little bit in the tray too.

The original nintendo was a PITA...I'd just get an emulator.

Do the connectors look rusty? That's supposed to be a problem with old school Nintendos. Though, mine is in mint condition. :D

I second the "barely insert game" trick.

Agreed. One must wonder how this knowledge became so widespread without the Internet.

i always found a good elbowdrop to work. if that isnt possible, a legdrop will work as well. seriously, with that kind of force, you scare the fvck out of the system and it starts working for a little while. always worked for me...

Yes. There were multiple versions of the Genisis as well.

Four that I know of.
Original
New (which matched the second sega CD shell and 32x without adapter)
weird third one which was really rare
the one which was handheld but no screen or something. I vaguely remember it.

There were actually 3 versions, but the second didn't have any cosmetic changes. If you've ever looked isdies the thing, then you'll see there was a sound processor or something seperate from the rest of the circuitry. In the later versions, this was integrated into the rest of it. The 3rd SNES was smaller the dreamcast but used the same circuit board, I think... it was a final marketing kick to combat the Playstation shortly after the launch of the Nintendo 64.

go out and by Contra, by far the best game! My friend and I played it all the time back in the day...

I had a cartride cleaner, I doubt you can find 'em anymore, though.
