dont know where to start but system specs are in sig and my HDD is an oldschool Fujitsu MPD3084AT. 8.4g 5400 ata/33. seriesly slow, i know. but on a budget for next few months....paying back school loans is a $@#%$#.
with that said. i can post and get into bios and set everything up fine. but once i go to install xp pro, legit copy it STALLS on the last part "Finalizing insallation" "setup will complete in aprox 9 mins" and it is -saving the settings-. it has been here for 1hr 29 mins now. this is the second time i have done a full reformat. and if i cancel and restart install i get blue screens of death saying there is an device error.
my mobo manual says it will support my UDMA ata/33 hdd.

is there something im missing with my system being all new and 64bit but my OS and HDD not being that? i dont know if there are any settings i need to change...it all should be automatic.

i guess waiting longer for the OS install to finish wont hurt anything. maybe since my HDD is so slow 33mb/s it will jsut take forever.

does anybody have some words of or helpful hints. i know i should get a new HDD, i will by july for sure. but for now i need to have my comp working.

thanks

hmm that sounds unusual. if the hard drive is in working order your setup should be working fine. it formatted, read and wrote on the hard drive so that would seem to indicate it works. it wouldn't be anything with the processor as you are installing a 32bit OS the processor is only running as a 32bit processor.

do you have another OS you could try? any will do, 2K, ME, 9x etc. If you do try one of those and see how it responds.

Also, from reading what you wrote it sounds like you have tried installing twice? Did it freeze at exactly the same instant both times? If it froze at different times your problem could be heat related.

i will try my w2k here shortly to see if i get it to work. it freezes at the same point each time.

funny thing is the paragraphs on the right of the screen durning OS install that show suggestions on using the OS, are still scrolling and changing.

its been 2 hrs now. and nothing has changed.

arg
thanks

hmm before you try w2k do one thing, reboot on the XP CD, it should detect what you have of the XP install. Choose to repair it rather than reformating. Maybe you can work around it like that.

If the side screens keep changing then it definitely isn't heat. This is an odd one indeed.

well it aint the old technology of the drive, i had to run a 5.25 4000 rpm old school quantum bigfoot until my new drive came, i am running a 3000+ athlon64...so i know the old hard drives will work fine....
