Old School game question: AOE2

Kenazo

Lifer
So, a coupld of friends got together and decided to play this game again. Friend number 2 seems to love using stupid Persian Elephants. They seem almost unstoppable. What's the key?

Pikemen in front of Longbowman tended to at least dent them...

When all your pikes are dead, shoot your longbow guys and run anytime they get close, rinse, repeat. Bring up more pikemen asap

But I lost every game ever...so dont listen to me 😛

About a 6 priests per elephant. Have them all convert it at once. Works every time.

i played aoe 1 back in the day. Priests always did the trick against elephants nicely.

Converting them always worked well for me.

Do a search. I can't remember what worked well against each opponent.

what if pretty much all he has is elephants. like 40 or so of them coming at you. I can't see that it would be possible to convert them fast enough.

If you let him build up to the point where he has 40 elephants you already lost.

He insists on playing deathmatch, so it's possible to build up some pretty impressive armies pretty quick. (we play @ his house since he has 3 computers there and a big hub for everyone else to plug into).

I usually do the Franks and make Palladins, Hand Canoneers, and pikemen and try and take out his elephants that way. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

Get some priests and convert the ones in the MIDDLE of the pack. That'll disrupt his lines. Get a few siege weapons...I used magonels...put halbrediers (sp) in front in 'hold formation' to halt the advance...and let the siege weaps take over. Keep converting. Bring some cavalry (or more halbs/pikes) in the rear and and crush inward (keep converting!)

Oh...if you're really in a pinch, grab some villies and throw up piecies of walls behind your men...and pull them back. The obstructions will slow/bottleneck your enemy.

That never failed for me. Even if I lost most of my units in the process, my resource loss was nothing compared to what they burned on 40 elephants.

Halberdiers and monks, my friend, with some siege onagers at the back if you can manage. But be prepared to spend a LOT on stopping the elephants.

from what i recall...

pikemans were very effective... my friend loved building up a army of those and waltz into my base pffft. (some of the games we allowed each other to build up our army ie. his fav his 50+ elephants)

*edit* oh yeah I remember one of my defence against a elephant herd was having a 3 layer wall with muiltple castles... that with some pikeman/longrange... deter them away from my base...

it was VERY $$$ though ahaha..
