Old school DLP TVs can do 3D?

So I used to own a 61 inch Sammy DLP TV. Freaking LOVED it, I got it for 1200 shipped and the PQ was amazing. I eventually got rid of it because I did a cross-country bike ride and didn't have anywhere to store it.

Now I'm back into looking for components for a new home theater setup, and I am kind of torn because I'd like to be on the 3D bandwagon and that means waiting and paying out the ass for it. However, someone at work mentioned DLP TVs have been doing 3D for years, and Magnavox has a converter box of some sort that can make your 2-3 year old DLP TV suddenly able to do the fancy 3D stuff new TVs are going to do.

Is this true? Could I really go buy another ~60 or so inch DLP beast, and watch stuff in 3D when it comes out? How's that work? This sounds like one of those too good to be true things.

Apparently the 2009 Mitsubishi DLPs (wd-xxC9, -xx737, xx837) are compatible with the upcoming bluray 3d standard:

I think the standard requires active shutter glasses with an IR sync connection between the display, playback device and glasses. It's like nvidias thing, I think.

There's also a lot of discussion on the AVS forum, both in the Mits DLP owner's thread:

and in the 3d video thread:

Let us know what you find out there! I expect a full report to help me decide if I need to get a WD-60C9 before the 2010 World Cup airs in 3D.

The 3d transmitter for the current Mitsu TVs is due to be released "soon" but we'll see what happens. I really don't care about 3d but if the price is right I may try it out.

As it relates to this thread, I bought a wd-65837 a week ago. Great TV for those who don't care about wall-mounting.
