Why are we buying food and drug items from china. Hell why are we even buying anything. Even toys made there are full of lead. First cats/dogs were dieing from Chinese products now its humans in the US and other countries...

FDA thinks it has trigger in heparin deaths

They say there are no proven direct links yet but if a doctor said would you rather use this US made drug or the chinese version which would you choose?

I worked at a drug maker and our tanks had to be perfect clean. We had to test after cleaning them and of course after the test we had to reclean them again to make sure we did not put anything in the tanks afterwards from the test. Yet the article here states...

"It also cited equipment used in the manufacture of heparin as "unsuitable for intended use."

For example, it said, tanks used to make heparin "were identified as clean," but "unidentified material was observed adhering to the inside surfaces.""

When we tested our tanks we were testing for unseen items. If there was anything seen that tank was not used and was cleaned, tested, etc.. until we were sure it was ready. Yet these places have tanks with stuff you can see and they call that clean.

Here is a 2008 FDA report on this chinese makers facility.

I'm sure you already know the reasons but I'll list them anyway:

1. Everything from taxes to employees wages are very costly here in the US. All companies are driven by profit and if they can reduce up-front expenses by moving their manufacturing to China they will do it.
2. Everyone here in the US shops price(just look at AT Hot Deals) and nobody looks to see where something is made or in many cases have no choice but to purchase a foreign made good just because that's all there is. The companies that move their production to China can of course charge less than the domestic producers.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Now, if you want to practice what you preach, go out and buy American made products only. Be prepared to pay more though.

Oh but I do. My wife wanted a platform bed. Found one that was $2000 or so yet it was still made in china and not even solid wood all around. So I am making it myself.

Also I disagree about costing more for a lot of US goods. Sure the upfront price might be higher but over its life it will be cheaper. Kinda like buying a good made tool vs a cheap harbor freight one that you have to replace several times. Let alone food and drugs. ;)

With tools made in China I'd bet! ;)

Are you saying that American made products don't ever have issues? Manufacturing in the US will find issues just like any other country, but the media is looking for the issues in China, and so that's what we focus on.

FDA has major control over US facilities. Over seas they have to get permission and by the time they get in the place is cleaned up. In the US they can come at anytime.

Sorry but for food and drugs I stick to as much US made as I can.

I make a habit of checking to see where something is made before I buy it. I will not buy something made in China if I absolutely don't have too. I'll spend the $2 or $3 more on small ticket items to get something non-chinese.

99% of Chinese products are crap and though you may save a few bucks up front, you will pay more in the long run because you'll have to replace that item sooner. I learned this 10 years ago. I used to shop based on price, and after shearing parts off of hand tools and having clothes fall apart in less than a year, I came to the conclusion that Chinese made items are complete crap.

I've got a 20 something year old craftsman ratchet that is still going strong. I had misplaced it one day and needed a ratchet so I bought a cheap one at HD and after a day of working on my old Trans Am I couldn't get a socket off the head because I had torqued the head and twisted the metal square on the end so much that it wouldn't let the bearing depress so I could remove the socket.

Because we are capitalists.

When US unions priced their labor so ridiculously high, it gave a leg up to overseas companies and taking production off shore. Yes, it's really that simple. Most manufacturing jobs are unskilled labor. There is no reason whatsoever that unskilled labor should be priced as high, or higher than many skilled labor jobs. The average wage for union manufacturing jobs in the US was $21 an hour in 2002.

Why would I want to buy something made in the US when I can get the same thing made overseas for 1/3 the cost? True patriotism is not buying US made goods to save jobs, it is stopping the overpaying of unskilled labor and making the US more competitive on the world market again.

And Dave, most Chinese manufacturing jobs pay signifigantly more than 25 cents an hour but don't let that stop you from spreading your biased and confused ignorance around as usual.

According to this, the average Chinese manufacturing wage is $.57/hour. This is pretty much why Chinese goods are so much cheaper. This gives the situation initial economic incentive to get started; what's happening now is that China depends on the US buying its cheaply produced stuff to expand its (China's) economy. To prop up the dollar, and keep American consumers spending, China buys up billions (trillions?) in US debt. Should America stop buying Chinese stuff, China will call in its debt (that is, act on it more actively instead of working to prop up the US economy) and the US economy will collapse, probably taking the rest of the world with it. The reverse is true too; if China wrecks the US economy, they'll have killed the hand that feeds them. It's a self-perpetuating cycle, and as China develops, they'll need the US less and less, and they'll still be holding the dollars.

$21 an hour isn't over paid, it's survival. While I'm sure it would be nice to have a peon class that would work for dirt so the rest of us could have more, it's not something I think we should do. Sooner or later, the peons figure out that they are just as important to the process as everyone else, and want more money.

Mardis Gras: Made in China

I think this video pretty much says it all.

I typed a response 2 times, but this new notebook is giving me fits with the smaller keyboard. Somehow I keep accidentally deleting my reply, lol.

Try 10-15 cents an hour and then getting docked for unrealistic manufacturing quotas. And then getting docked for living expenses like food and lodging in overcrowded quarters. Of course, a more high tech job might actually pay 50 cents an hour, like to build pc parts or electronics. Those workers are harder to replace than bead makers.

What's interesting about this video is the way this grinning and delusional factory owner keeps trying to convince himself and others how great his working conditions are and how happy the wage slaves are. And this is supposed to be a better factory there. Here, it's called a prison.

Yeah I agree for the most part.

I do my very best to buy local and support small business. For the most part I do not shop at big box stores.
