Old RAID giving me trouble

Hey guys,

I just got my new system all installed and everything is working great. Asus a8v mobo, fx-53, dual 10k RPM raptors, etc etc.

One of the reasons I bought a new PC is to get access to some data on my old raid set. They are 2 IBM 20gb 5400IBM drives. The raid was created on an ABIT KT7 RAID mobo. My old computer somehow died about a year ago. It wouldn't post or anything. Now when I try installing those 2 IBM 20gb drives into my new system, a there is no array recognized. In addition, one of the drives never really gets spinning. It makes a fairly high-pitched whinning (like it is booting up) and then it sounds as if it just turns off abrupty and starts over.

Here's the thing: I dont care about the hard drives; I really want the data from them. Is there any home-made way to get data from these drives? Should I send to IBM for fixing? Should I use some data recovery service? How much can I exect to pay to get 40gb worth of data from a raid?

Thanks for your time,
Ryan Brucks

RAID 0, I assume?

If so and one of them is not spinning up, that is a big problem. Somebody may have some suggestions of thngs you can try, but I certainly would not send it back to IBM. They're version of fixing a drive is probably going to be shipping back a known good rebuilt one to replace it, without your data.

If you can't get the drive running, our company uses Ontrack for data recovery. They aren't cheap, but they generally get the job done, if it is possible to get the job done.

Of course, if it is RAID 1, forget most all of the above and there is probably no problem :)

nope, it is raid 0 :(

when you say 'not cheap' what do you mean? A hundreds, thousands? I would hate to pay that much but I'm afraid that I would if I knew it would get my data back.

Ontrack prices things partially by how fast you want them. If you pay enough, they'll turn it around in a day or two. Otherwise, it is probably in the hundreds. I guess it also depends on what they have to do to gain access to the drive.

My guess would be between $750 and $1,000 somewhere. We've never sent them a RAID pair, so I am just taking a guess based on other things we have sent them.
