We are trying to run an old communications software program that used to run on a 386 machine running DOS 5 on a new P3 machine running windows 2000 (don't ask why). There seems to be a problem with the speed issue or some hardware issue, but we can't figure out how to configure it to work. Is it possible to make the P3 run like a crappy 386? Thanks.

You aren't really comparing Apples to Apples here. If I remember correctly, didn't 386's and such have a Turbo mode? I don't think underclocking the p3 would do the trick (probably not even possible to go that low anyways) Are you running the program in a shell of DOS? Have you tried booting a computer to DOS and running it from there?

not enough info. What program, how does it communicate, what ports?

you should be able to get this to run, might have to setup compatibility mode.

Far as "running to fast" naw, that's not the issue.

If the old system used a modem, and your new system has a modem, it shouldn't be an issue....just a config pain in da butt.

The program communicates over the serial port. It's basic RS422 I believe. We are running the program from a cmd prompt on the 2000 machine because I didn't think it was possible to boot to DOS in 2000. The two machines can talk to each other, but only one of the machines can talk to a third machine.
