Old online popular PC games that don't need loads of patches? (FPS)

I want a game (FPS) that I can play online without needing a decent internet connection (I can get 45k on my 56k modem)

Can't be a$$ed with CS and all the patches and everything else it constantly needs, since I only have a 56k, so are there any other popular games that will run nicely on a 56k? (Q3 and UT are too slow to play OK)

I used to play UT just fine on my 31k connection.

Quake. There are servers that run 24/7 that you can connect to. But the people still playing that game are very good. 🙂 And there's no centralized server to connect to so you have to find your own servers. 🙂

I get pings of 180 and it's pretty hard to manage to actually hit people,rather than using rockets or something, or luck, to get them.

Try Quake or Quake II. I used to play them all the time on a 28.8/56k connection back in high school.

I play Day of Defeat. It's a Half-Life mod and if you already have HL patched, you just need to get the full version of the game to play. You can even buy it at your local software store if large downloads are too painful for you.
