Old OLD PC games

Way way back when PC's and the internet were quite new, there wasn't much to play. I do remember spending countless hours at work (the only place I knew of with a PC) playing a dungeon crawl game that was made out of symbols and letters on the keyboard. There were 26 monsters, each one siginified by a letter of the alphabet (E was Emu, X was Xerox, etc). The "hero" was a smiley face, and you had to guide him to the stairs going down to the next level. This was about as basic a game as there is, but it kept us occupied, now I can't remember the name of it. Anyone?

Another one was for the Apple IIc, it was again very simple but addictive. You started with a helicopter on the right side of the screen, and you had I think 3 letters to play with. On eletter would start a tank going towards the left, another was a soldier, and one was an engineer (there may have been others, I can't remember). You had to get a good group going, as the computer was doing the same thing out of sight on the left, and when the armies met, they would fight each other one at a time. The helicopter was controlled with a joystick, and it had heat seeking missiles, but so did the computer. Keep in mind this was all made from white lines on a black background. 2 points if you can come up with the name for this one.

And lastly, anyone remember a game (again for the Apple IIc) called Elite? I wonder if there was ever a newer version of this game.

Apple IIc had some fun games... karate and g.i. joe comes to mind (had to keep flipping the floppy disk up and down for this one 😱)

Oh yeah, I remember the karate one. Might and Magic was a big thing when that came out too. God, how pathetic those games are compared to what's out now, but back then, they were the best thing out.

Yeah there must be a newer version because downloaded it from the-underdogs.org a little while back.

Fun game, pretty tough though.

Edit: This it?

Edit2: There's also Elite Plus. Looks like it's had it's graphics redone.

Yep, that looks like an update to it. It was an amazing little game, hundreds of planets to go to, then you had to buy stuff and sell it at other planets, make some money, upgrade your ship, etc. Seemed like I got to a certain point in the game though, and no matter how much I played I couldn't advance after a certain point.

Then it's time for: Cheat-o-matic.

Oh man, that second on e you described sounds so familiar. I remember that. You had to save up and then you could shoot stuff out at one time. But the vehicles and people weren't the same speed so you had to tie when to release them. That was awesome.

And you could fly around and pick up guys and drop them off in other places and the helicopter could shoot stuff too right? Man I'd like to see that again.

Yes, you had to have a good strategy to win the game, and when you had a couple of missiles chasing you, you had to do some real fancy flying to get away.

The only chopper games I remember from back then would be Armor Alley and Choplifter, but neither or which sound right from your description.

Man, Rogue brings back some good memories. Sitting aroung a computer with my best friend and older brother seeing how far we could get. 🙂

Speaking of old computer games, anyone remember and/or played Incunabula? There was a timesink for me, hot seat multiplayer, those were the days 🙂

That's it!

🙂

Just played a game of Rogue, holy crap, how pathetic! I can't begin to figure out how many hours I played this back in the day. Then again, I was part of the Pong genreation, I remember when that was the biggest thing around.

my son love to play donkey & gorilla when he was about 4 years old.
the games were free & about as simple as you can get.

kaboom is where it's at. as for dos games, give me paratrooper, galactix, and any of the side scrollers (commander keen, duke nukem, secret agent, crystal caves). i put some time into those

The only game I remember from the Apple IIe is Montezuma's/Monteczuma's Revenge.

Most of the OG games my friends had, when I was young, were Commodore64 games that took 30min+ to load.

Well, hopefully someone will have this thing somewhere or know what it's called. I remember playing it for hours but lots of that was because it was just slow, but it was a lot of fun.

How about Racter?

It was an early DOS AI-based program that would converse with you. The Mac version had a voice synthesis that was very good, but I recall that the PC version installed an early version of Windows (2.0 I think). I still have it up on my shelf at home...

Rescue Raiders - this is the one where you had to get the Demolition truck all the way to the other side, right? And you earned money by killing enemies. Loved this game.

O jeeze, I remember that one. Lost interest after a while, I didn't have the voice synthesizer.
