Old, old laptop, lost the adaptor - what can I use??

I have an HP Pavilion N5470 that I bought in 2001 and havent used for years. There is something on the hard drive that I want to get at. But I have lost the plugin adapter and the battery is long since run down.

I have a friend who has a box of old junk and a number of adapters. If I find one that at least nominally is the same voltage as the battery, and the plug fits the hole, can I use it? Or do I risk frying something?

Battery says 11.1 Volt 5400mah Li-Ion Battery Pack
Part Number B5640LI

If it's the right voltage and size, it should be okay, except you'll also want to check the polarity on it to make sure they match too.

Oh, and the wattage should at least be in the ballpark.

Or you could just pull the HDD and toss it in an external enclosure.
