old monitor with new GPU

I recently bought a Radeon HD 5670 to add to a computer at home. It has an i3 2100 CPU that I had been running the onboard graphics just fine. I wanted to upgrade for some games (lower end). I decided to get the 5670 because the price was right and it rated well on the price vs performance on passmark.
My problem is that when I installed it, I got nothing out of it. I have an older LCD monitor(VGA and DVI input), that I had been using. I also tried it with an even OLDER CRT monitor(VGA only input), also nothing. I did get output on my new samsung TV (HDMI input), so I know the card works with that. I did the change of making the card the default instead of onboard CPU for graphics, that didn't help.

Question is, do new GPUs not work with older monitors? Or is there something else to try? Thanks

I may not be any help, but you do also have to make sure the graphics is also changed in your system mother board BIOS. Not just through windows only. Also check on some older AMD/ATI video drivers for compatibility with your older LCD.

New GPUs should work fine with older monitors - as long as they are still VGA or DVI.

Did you add the drivers for the video card in the first place - the new ones from ATI? Did you try reseating the video card? Do you have only one PCIe x16 slot?

What is the make and model of your PSU? Many basic systems don't have the power to drive even a low power card., although I am not sure how this relates since it does work with TV.

What exactly do you see on the monitor when you connect to the new video card - a black screen?

Did you try both VGA and DVI inputs on your old monitor?

While less likely - it could be a problem with the cable - can you borrow a cable to test with?

My last PC before the upgrade has an ATI X800XT All-In-Wonder card, and at one point about a year ago I retired the old CRT for a Samsung 23" flat panel. After the switch, I never got a working display until the XP logon screen appeared -- the panel would not sync with the card in POST, BIOS or text mode.

I returned the Samsung and got an LG, and everything worked fine after that.

Wondering if you're having a similar sync issue with certain monitors.

Does your telly have a DVI connector (unlikely I think)? Do you have a DVI-HDMI cable you can use to connect your TV to your card?

Thank you everyone for your input. I was up late last night and was able to get my LCD to work. I removed the card, checked the connections, used the disk that came with the card to un-install and re-install the software/drivers, went online and downloaded all the newest downloads/drivers and stuff that was on the ATI site. Checked and reconnected the VGA cable and it worked!! I am not sure what step it was that fixed it.

Now one last question. On the back of the card there are VGA and DVI outputs, I have both inputs for my monitor. Does it make a difference? Will it be better to hook up a DVI?
