Hello,

I have a major issue here, no idea were to start so here I go, thanks for all the help in advance :)

So my computer has this issue, which I have RMA'ed the mobo before but the problem still stayed and now my warranty is up. Yes bad Idea not to send it back but it was working with the problem.

The problem is when the mobo switches on the power it instantly shuts it off, like I was holding the power button down.

Some times I can just plug in the power from the wall and the computer will turn on by its self. Can be on for 30 sec then turn off.. 1sec .. ect but all the time once its been on for 30 sec or so it was good to go. Now when I try to get it to go on for more then 30 sec which means unplug power wait for the power down sound in psu , plug back in and hope for post, rinse repeat if post does not come upon first attempt.

Well now it wont stay on for more then 30 sec at all. I know that if you get a paper clip and connect black with a green wire it powers up the PSU will I have to make some mod were I manually make the psu switch on?.

I have already tried a new PSU as well, so it leads me to the mobo.

SPECS
Amdx2 4200
MSI K8N Neo4/SLI (DDR (not ddr 2)
Smart power 2.0 Antec PSU

Thanks again :)

Problem isn't the motherboard. The problem is your POS PSU. The SP2 has a history of going bad pretty fast. Get a new PSU and your problems should be solved. That is if the PSU hasn't damaged your motherboard.

In his post he says he tried a different PSU. He edited though, he could have added that in response to your post.

Heh, my work computer exhibited the same symptoms, started all of a sudden and deteriorated within a day or two to become unusable. It also was an MSI socket 939 board. :Q It was definately the motherboard that was faulty, and I had to replace it. Nothing was obviously wrong with the board (no burnt traces or bulging caps) and the same PSU is happily powering the replacement (also MSI) board.

How about just get an external enclosure for your desktop HDD?

Could just be a CMOS battery. Also, you said you tried a different PSU; but what was the other PSU you tried. Replacing one POS PSU with another will just give same results...

Another thought: symptoms look an awful lot like the front panel push button for on / off is malfunctioning. Seems to "stay pushed in" sometimes, other times it seems not to connect at all. Try disconnecting the two wires from it at the mobo pin pair. Then for testing purposes, manually short out those mobo connector pins briefly to simulate a momentary push of the front panel button. A long connect time (over 4 seconds typically) is used to force a shut-down when running. Does the machine work properly this way? Then the front panel button is the problem. If it still misbehaves with the button leads disconnected, then you are back to mobo issues.
